Oilers Doing It The Red Wings Way

from John MacKinnon of the Edmonton Journal via the National Post,

By design or not, the Oilers front-office begins to resemble the gold standard, that of the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings.

In Detroit, single owner Mike Ilitch has an all-star hockey department, led by GM Ken Holland, assistant GM Jim Nill, vice-president and GM-in-training Steve Yzerman, with longtime hockey man Jim Devellano in the mix as senior vice-president.

Ilitch also has a shelf full of recent Stanley Cups.

In urging Lowe to beef up the hockey operations side, Katz is demonstrating he will do what is required to try to make that happen in Edmonton again.

“Group think” is very important when making decisions in the NHL, particularly personnel decisions.  This is why losing Scotty Bowman is a big blow to the Red Wings.

Don’t overreact too much w2j2. The Wings still have a front office that is unrivaled in depth, hockey knowledge, and chemistry. It is definitely tough to lose the best non-playing hockey mind the game has ever known, but the Wings are the only organization equipped to deal with it.

It had to happen at some point, and this was probably as good of a time as any. He left the club with 15 years worth of insight and knowledge, turned Ken Holland into the premier GM in the league, and clearly helped groom Steve Yzerman into a hell of an exec who’s abilities in that front are only growing still.

Good points, all.
I would expect that Yzerman would pick up a lot of Bowman’s responsibilities.

When Toronto was circling around the Wings’ front office looking for someone to help them, the most sensible comment that I heard was that if the team kept everybody, someone would have to leave at some point in order to extend their managerial experience.

Instead of one of the newer (cf Bowman) guys leaving, they are sticking around and Bowman is the one leaving.
