Old Rivalries and New

Lew Serviss at the NYT Slapshot blog has prepared a breakdown of the first round:

Montreal Canadiens vs. Boston Bruins
After the first Thanksgiving at Plymouth Rock, the Pilgrims and the Indians rode into town to watch the Bruins face the Canadiens. Well, it sure seems like this rivalry goes back that far. The Habs and B’s will go at it for the 25th time in the playoffs. This time, it hardly looks like a fair fight.

Lidstrom, the Tom Brady of the Detroit power play, had another incomparable season and will collect his fourth Norris Trophy after a 70-point, plus-40 season.

I guess this guy doesn’t know they awarded the Norris prior to 2003?

Quite right, Shep (about the number, not the pre-2003 part). Thanks for noticing. I also got confirmation from the NHL on the number of Mtl-Bost playoff series—this one is 31, not 25. The best fact-checkers are here at Kukla’s Korner. My next post will have far fewer numbers, I promise.
