One Minute Penalties in OT

From the CP via TSN,

One-minute penalties for overtime during the regular season?

That was one of the many issues discussed Monday as the NHL’s 30 GMs broke out into four different groups to tackle a number of subjects.

Anaheim Ducks GM Brian Burke is keen on the idea of one-minute penalties in overtime instead of two. The thinking is that 4-on-3 power plays in overtime take up 40 per cent of the entire five-minute period and more than often end the game.

“One-minute penalties in overtime just makes so much sense,” Burke said Monday after the first day of meetings.

Burke always has good ideas. This one sounds good too.

What happens if a player takes a penalty with 1 second left in regulation though?

The penalty minutes remaining could be cut in half at the start of OT.

I like this idea… kinda crazy that you could have a 2-min penalty in a 5-min period.

I also like the idea of the initial PP faceoff in the PK teams zone… esp in OT.

Why doesn’t the NHL treat penalties like soccer does?

One penalty is a yellow card but you keep on playing. Two penalties and you get a red card and you’re out of the game.

Maybe the NBA is better. Keep on playing through the penalties but reach five and you’re gone.

Why don’t people think of ways to improve the game without changing all these rules? Soon, when something happens on the ice, the referees will have to consult their Funk and Wagnalls manual of penalties.

I’ve always believed that the purpose of penalities was, wait for it, penalizing the team that has infringed on the rules of the game.  A two-minute minor is a two-minute minor, regardless of when the infraction occurred.

How about re-introducing the rule stating that a player serves the entire two minutes of a minor penalty, regardless of how many PP goals are scored.  That was the rule until the Habs got so proficient on the PP in the late 50’s that the league changed it.  Obviously, this wouldn’t apply to overtime games, but too many games are going the OT/SO route these days, and this is a simple change that could help decide games in regulation time.
