from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
If you want to know why the Maple Leafs gave up on and gave away Bryan McCabe, here it is in a nutshell:
McCabe got to pick where he wanted to play and he chose the Florida Panthers. Translation: He doesn’t give a hoot whether he wins or loses and the Leafs were well aware of that. Who would want an apparent leader who is happy playing for a team in a messed-up market that never contends?

When Bryan McCabe goes to Florida, assuming his regression ends there, he joins a defence that includes emerging star, Jay Bouwmeester, and solid veterans Keith Ballard and Nick Boynton. The Panthers could be a playoff team in the East
Steve Simmons, 8/31/08. Emphasis mine.

...and the panthers will do far better than the leafs, and everyone in Toronto will be upset that McCabe was traded.

Wait.... I thought we were talking about McCabe, not Sundin?

I forget… when did Toronto become a contender again? Hey, if McCabe wanted out of a team with actual playoff aspirations to go to Florida that’s one thing, but what exactly is he trading away by leaving Toronto other than a hyper-critical fan base, over-active (and over-reactive) media, and moderate cruddy weather?
Maybe Simmons should be let in on a little secret: Florida will actually be better than Toronto on the ice in 08-9, so not only is McCabe ridding himself of all the shenannigans of the Toronto area, but he’s going to a better team to boot.

Simmons is typical of the Toronto media. When players such as McCabe or Sundin that have a no movement contract and refuse to waive it because they want to stay with the team, the media call them selfish instead of commending them for being committed to the team. When McCabe finally waives it, Simmons cries about McCabe waiving it to Florida. Steve Simmons is like child, I feel sorry for his wife.
I read one of the reasons McCabe waived it for Florida is his wife’s parents live in the area.

Man, that McCabe guy must be a real tool. He should obviously have said, “No, I’m staying in Toronto. I don’t care whether we win or lose, I just want to play for a team in a THRIVING market that never contends.”
