One Short Elevator Ride - One Lasting Impression

Girls in the elevator: We are here to see Soundmurderer (see Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival).

Me:  I am here for the Stanley Cup Finals.

A distinguished elderly woman in the elevator whispering (too loud) to her husband:  That’s Gerry Fisher!

Girls:  Who is Gerry Fisher?

Me:  Some fighter.

Jiri Fischer looks at me and smiles.

I had just introduced myself to Jiri moments before we stepped on the elevator last night after attending the Salute to the Stanley Cup Legends at the Marriott Renaissance.

‘Fisch’ is doing well and in my brief conversation with him, he still shows the passion every hockey player has.  He feels lucky to be alive, thinks people need to be aware of their bodies and is driven to inform the public about preventing heart ailments.

Jiri is enjoying his job with the Wings.  I believe his official title is Director of player development, meaning he works with the youngsters in the Wings organization, preparing them for their future in hockey.

While talking to him I flashbacked to that night, the night Wings fans want to forget but can’t. Fischer has been in the back of my head for some time and speaking with him put me at ease.  A sense of calmness hit me when talking with him and also made me reflect on my lifestyle.  I know I should tweak my day-to-day routine and after chatting with Jiri, I am going to make a more sincere effort to do so.

It was one of those moments I will not forget, a chance meeting of an eclectic group of people in an elevator, all in different stages of our lives but all brought together by one person, Jiri Fischer.

I hope the ‘girls’ somehow find this post on Jiri Fischer.  They will get the real story on him and reflecting back to the elevator ride, Fischer really is a fighter, a fighter for life!

Damn you, Paul. You got me. Thought I wasn’t going to get emotional today. wink

Careful though, keep it up and you’ll be the next Albom...but you know...in a good way.

Without getting ahead of myself, if the Wings are fortunate enough to win, it would be great to see Jiri and Vladdie on the ice during the presentation of the cup.  That moment in 1998 where Yzerman presented Konstantinov with the cup still chokes me up, I was absolutely balling at the time.
