OneGoal Hockey Show Begins Today In Detroit

Today the OneGoal Hockey Show begins at Cobo Hall in Detroit.  OneGoal is a non-profit organization that’s helped kids get involved with hockey by providing affordable equipment and fundamentals clinics, working in partnership with Hockey Canada and the major equipment manufacturers to raise awareness of and interest in the game.

OneGoal’s partnered with the industry manufacturers to make sure that a portion of the hockey equipment industry’s profits, especially at its major trade show, goes back into growing the game itself, and that’s what this weekend’s show is all about—except that the public’s invited to take a gander at the equipment industry’s 2008 product for the first time.

OneGoal has partnered with the Michigan Amateur Hockey Organization to begin implementing a pilot program in one of two U.S. states—with Texas being the other—to encourage youth participation south of the 49th parallel.  Michigan in particular has seen a 20% decline in youth hockey participation over the past few years due to our crappy economic times (we’ve lost over 200,000 jobs in the past 5 years), despite the fact that we’re the largest state in the union in terms of registered participants in hockey programs, so OneGoal’s initiatives to help make the game more affordable are particularly pertinent right here at home.

Mission-Itech, Warrior Hockey (which is based in Warren, MI), Sher-Wood, and Fury hockey will have the largest presences at the show, but you might have heard of some of the smaller exhibitors, like Thermablade will be present as well, and the Hockey Hall of Fame will have a substantial presence at the show, including an interactive display and some of the NHL’s biggest trophies.

This isn’t the comprehensive, all-in-one show—the industry is still consolidating its trade shows, so there’s a separate show for goaltending equipment, and a few scattered across North America, especially Las Vegas, as the industry usually gets together in January—but OneGoal is going to become the place for hockey equipment manufacturers to come together, and November works better for the industry.

The Detroit Red Wings and their captian, Nicklas Lidstrom, have partnered with OneGoal, as have a certain Ted Lindsay and a man who goes by “Mr. Hockey,” and the behind-the-scenes work that has gone into bringing OneGoal to Detroit has been Herculean, but it all comes together, as will the aforementioned stars at Cobo this weekend, and all it costs to get in is $5.

Besides, theres nothing better than hockey gear-heads talking shop and trying out the newest stuff!  This gearhead will see you there!

A silent auction, complete with nearly 200 memorabilia and opportunities for people to have dinner with their favorite players or attend practice, is currently open on-line at onegoalhockeyshow.net. Additionally, the Detroit Red Wings will host a OneGoal night, complete with youth hockey players skating between periods on Friday, Nov. 9.

The real reason hockey is considered a “fringe” sport in the U.S. is that there’s a HUGE amount of people that have even played the game in the U.S.  And yes, much of that reason is that sport is extremely expensive.

I’m so happy the industry has gotten together and seen the light.  The NHL is not the only way to promote the game.  A person who plays the game eventually becomes a fan of the game (not to mention a future customer).  Having more kids participate means more adults will participate, and that’s only good for all hockey fans.

Great job by those involved with this endeavor.  I hope to one day maybe see this in New York (I know that I’d volunteer).
