Ovechkin And Boudreau Talk About The Hit On Campbell

from Lindsay Applebaum of Capitals Insider,
“I didn’t hit him hard,” Ovechkin said of Campbell, who did not return to the game. “He fell bad. But you can see, every shift this happens—little pushes, little battles.”...
Unsurprisingly, Coach Bruce Boudreau had similar thoughts. “I didn’t think it was a bad, bad check worth a five and a game [misconduct],” he said. “A two at the most, but I don’t make the calls.”
more including video of both Ovechkin and Boudreau…

You know, somebody is going to run Ovechkin at some point in the very near future, probably in the first round of the playoffs, and it is going to be High Comedy hearing Boudreau and Ovie complain about ‘liberties being taken’ and whatnot.

Paul,
The post was by Lindsay Applebaum, WP Editor, not by Tarik El Bashir

Didn’t extend his arms? You can see his numbers but he didn’t hit him in the back?
Jesus, did I watch the same thing he watched?
The only reason Boudreau should open his mouth is to shove some KFC in there. It makes him fatter, but at least he doesn’t sound like a moron.
It was reckless, plain and simple, and he (just like Cooke…and Richards, for that matter, before him) should be suspended.
Since the Hawks are saying Campbell will miss at least 3 games…3 games for Number Eight would suffice.

Doesn’t this game misconduct mandate a suspension? I believe the rulebook says yes. Will the NHL follow its own rulebooks? Probably not. The reason I say it mandates a suspension is because of rule 23.5 seen here: http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26306
To quote: “In regular League games, any player or goalkeeper who incurs a total of two (2) game misconduct penalties for stick-related infractions, Boarding – Rule 42, or Checking from Behind – Rule 44, shall be suspended automatically for the next League game of his team.”
It goes on to say that the penalties reset after 41 consecutive games by the player. I don’t believe Ovechkin has played in 41 games since his last misconduct. I do believe that the capitols have though… but it says the player, not the team needs to play in 41 games and since ovechkin was suspended for 2 of them (when he was hurt, so lame) he appears to fit this penalty and should be suspended for at least one game, as the rulebook states.
I could care less what happens, apart from watching to see what the NHL does in terms of its own rulebook.

I’ve seen worse from Ovechkin and what Lapierre did is much worse than what Ovechkin did on this play. Edgy, borderline dirty, but probably doesn’t warrant a suspension if not for the automatic 3 game-misconducts thing.

Sucks. Campbell has been having a very good year. When he’s on, the team is on. Our PP has been clown shoes of late, so this is a huge blow.

With all the talk about headshots, people forget that this is the most dangerous hit in hockey. Sutton got a pair of games for this, pee wee puts big STOP stickers on helmets for this and the IIHF has no touch icing to prevent these types of plays.
