Ovechkin Chasing Gretzky

from Corey Masisak of the Washington Times,
Wayne Gretzky’s career total of 894 goals is supposed to be unreachable, but if Alex Ovechkin were to duplicate what he has accomplished in his first four seasons three more times, he would begin the first year of his new contract within reach of the Great One’s hallowed achievement.
History says not so fast, but is the Great No. 8 the guy who can defy it?
“I don’t think there is anything out of reach for him,” Washington Capitals general manager George McPhee said. “He’s got everything. He’s got ability, he’s got the drive and he’s got the strength. He’s got all the physical attributes, but he’s got all the intangibles as well.”

I think if any of Gretzky’s records are untouchable, it’s his assists records and by extension his points records. His goal records (single season & career) are much more attainable. But they are still going to be pretty tough to break, e.g. to break his career goals mark you would have to average about 45 goals a season for 20 seasons.

EP, the only reason Mario couldn’t do it was because of health.
I agree with Lindas, I think the goal scoring record is attainable, even in this current era. That said, I don’t think there’s any player in the game right now that is showing me they have what it takes to do it. Ovechkin has the talent and athleticism to play 20 years and average 45 goals per year, but the way he plays the game away from the puck is so rough and tumble I can’t see him holding up. However, he started young and got off to a quick start, a like like Gretz, so you never know.

Believe Me, I Know why ML couldn’t I Have lived in the Pgh. Area my whole Life, ML is Better than Ovechkin as great as he has been & ML couldn’t do it unless he was healthy & then it was a crap shoot if he could or not, Someone will Nail Ovechkin sooner or Later with his head down & get him back for one of his numerous cheapshot Boarding Penalties that are NEVER called

if Alex Ovechkin were to duplicate what he has accomplished in his first four seasons three more times
It sounds so easy when he puts it like that. Let’s put it another way to see if it still sounds so easy.
If Alex Ovechkin can average just under 55 goals per year through the next twelve years, Gretzky’s record should be attainable.
If Alex Ovechkin can keep up this scoring pace through three more presidential elections, it’s in the bag.
If Alex Ovechkin can still be scoring goals by the time this century is 1/5 over, Gretzky’s record is in trouble.
If Alex Ovechkin can outlast approximately 7,000 more new Fox Sitcoms, he’ll be in prime position to be the new all-time NHL goals leader.

As much as I hate to say it, OV will break this record. He is simply a goal scoring machine. I would never say he is better than Lemieux, but unless OV is is diagnosed with cancer, he is going to break that record.
The thing about OV is he is all about scoring… only about scoring one could argue. He shoots mores than anyone I have ever seen. He has done little to change his playing style since he has entered the league, and shows no signs of changing things in the future. This guy will be Chelios old and still firing 15 shots a game at the opposing goalie.
As a side note, does anyone know Gretzky’s goal totals while he played only in the NHL? I really hate that they inlcude his numbers from the other league.

As a side note, does anyone know Gretzky’s goal totals while he played only in the NHL?
His NHL regular season totals are: 1487, 894-1963-2857, +518, 577
These do not include NHL playoffs or any WHA stats.
