Alexander Ovechkin scored his 50th goal of the season midway in the first period against the Lightning.
AO followed the goal with a celebration with his hands wiggling over his stick which he had placed on the ice.
added 8:36pm, via Tarik El-Bashir of Capitals Insider,
After ripping a shot past Mike McKenna, Ovechkin dropped his stick then bent over it and attempted to pick it up. But each time he reached down he pretended that the stick was too hot to touch.
The Lightning fans didn’t appreciate the gesture and booed Ovechkin. Can’t wait to see what Don Cherry will have to say about it on Coach’s Corner on Saturday night.

I guess God actually intended for the goal to come against Tampa Bay, eh Alex?

Clearly, that one was for Don.
Cherry does the same move all the time except it usually involves misplacing his dignity, and it always involves him not getting it back.

Don would much rather see some kids beating the crap out of each other.

Not true. Don would much rather see a Canadian kid beating the crap out of a Swedish kid.
Big difference.

Marty Brodeur shattered the all-time wins record this week he did a split-second fist-pump and then treated it as a routine. Ovechkin scored his 50th goal of the year and had a seizure until Green stopped him. I’m all for enthusiasm, but more and more I think it is getting excessive.
Kudos to Tampa for booing him after it went on too long. I love the guy, easily the best player in the NHL. I just think he’d be so much better if he showed a little more class (not at the expense of his personality, just with the crazy celebrations) and maybe took a little better care of his physical appearance. With all his money, he could afford a haircut and a handful of teeth. You represent the whole league and are the best player in the league, make them proud.

It’s a generational thing. Showmanship is a lot more common among kids - in everything. It’s harmless.
If the NHL is going to talk about how they have to market the players more and get their personalities out there, they have to realize that sometimes they aren’t going to express themselves in ways that the management is entirely comfortable with. They can’t control every detail - deal with it.

Ovie is very good for selling the game. Too bad for Gary. He hitched his wagon to the wrong star. Also, do you think there would be any uproar if it were Sid and not Ovie? Really?

Um… then took a half hour to cut the net off for a souvenir, interrupting other games being played at that time.

Kate, of course there would be an uproar if Sid did it. He’s one of the most scrutinized players in the game, and besides, any player who’s showboating deserves to be criticized, and eventually will spark retaliation from the other team. Great players aren’t perfect and shouldn’t be immune to the criticism. The real question is, why are you bringing up Crosby at all for something Ovechkin did wrong?

Wake me when he starts referring to himself in third person.

I didn’t really like this celebration because it was obviously staged, but I’m not going to get all pissy about it like some people. I did like how it was sort of a team idea, with Theodore coming up with the idea and Backstrom and Green supposed to join in (but chickening out, apparently).

Congrats Bettman. The NHL is now just as bad as the NBA. Congrats.
