Overuse Of A Theme Song

from Joe Pelletier of Greatest Hockey Legends,
Is it just me or does the Hockey Night In Canada theme song lost it’s luster now that is on TSN?
They have completely over used the jingle, playing it at every opportunity. And they gave it a terrible accompanying video montage.
Meanwhile CBC has come up with a catchy tune which I think I might actually like better.

TSN has done just about every imaginable wrong thing with the theme since they got it. It was overused before the season even started.
First off, their new orchestral recording of it doesn’t hold a candle to the version that CBC used. Then, “having fun” with it, by having the Bare Naked Ladies redo it was AWFUL.
They play it EVERY single time they advertise a game showing on the net.
They’ve completely ruined the song for me. I didn’t really care when CTV/TSN got the song at the time, but now I’m hating that they got it because they took a great, iconic song and completely drove it into the ground.
I actively avoid the beginning of any TSN hockey telecast so that I don’t have to hear the song, and STILL I hear parts of it a dozen times a week just tuning into Sportscentre for highlights.

I still remember the first TSN-televised game of the season.
When the first few notes started up, James Duthie said “Oh, there it is. There’s that song.”
And I thought “Damn, they’re going to throw it in our face and ruin it.”
And then the video montage began and I nearly threw up.

I like the new theme song for HNIC a lot.
It sounds like TSN wants so much to flaunt that they beat CBC that they are ruining the previous theme - maybe it’s a mark of insecurity that they can’t stop reminding people that they won, the song is theirs, and dammit they can do whatever they want to with it. Sad.

I think someone at CTV honestly believed that simply having the HNIC theme song would improve their broadcast and maybe build up their credibility and now they’re trying to convince everyone else about it.

I agree. I don’t like the TSN version at all. It sounded better on CBC. That said, I really like the new CBC theme. They did a great job with it.
