Pat Quinn Upset With ‘Dirty’ Play Of Iginla

from Scott Cruickshank of Flames Insider at the Calgary Herald,

But really steaming Quinn’s bean was one particular play by Jarome Iginla. Early in the second period, the Flames captain had knocked out the feet of Sheldon Souray, then landed on top of the Oilers defenceman . . . all of which drove Souray’s face into the boards, cutting him and concussing him.

Later, Iginla did answer the bell — accepting the straight-up challenge from Ethan Moreau (and even letting the Oilers captain regain his feet after he’d fallen down).

Not near enough, according to Quinn.

Not even close.

“That’s not addressing it,” huffed Quinn. “In the era I come from, you’re supposed to do dirt with dirt. You don’t give him honour (by offering to fight him fair and square). Why would you give a man honour for that kind of a play? He honoured him with a fistfight.”

While his own coach is taking a long-term approach to re-shaping Jarome Iginla’s game, Edmonton Oilers head coach Pat Quinn is in favour of a much quicker makeover.

And he could care less about the way Iginla plays.

Iginla took out Oilers defenceman Sheldon Souray’s feet as the two went into the corner, then landed hard on top of him.

The play was out of character for Iginla, but it was surely the dirty kind of move that — had Daniel Carcillo or Jordan Tootoo done it — would be routinely called “chicken-bleep” by those around the game.

“It was a freaky play — I definitely didn’t mean to do it,” he said.
