Paul Kelly Would Like “Widespread” TV Coverage Of The NHL

from Stan Fischler at MSG Network, (Paul) Kelly wants to canvass his constituency to get an overall feel for the membership’s thinking. One thing he emphasized to us is his desire to see more widespread TV coverage in the U.S.
He didn’t mention ESPN by name, but rather by implication that a renewed marriage between the biggest sports network and Bettman, Inc. would be highly desirable. It’s tough to argue that point!

Oh, well THANK GOODNESS, STAN
you can stop taking your McCarthyism pills…
Geez. Fischy will be back on Kelly’s case as soon as Bettman lets him back off his leash. As Lyle notes, with the league sycophants in particular, the NHL most certainly pulls their strings, and pulls them hard, when matters concerning the PA are involved. The amount of media manipulation involved, on a day-to-day basis, to “help” mold the media’s portrayal of the NHL-NHLPA relationship is intense.

I am glad you guys noticed the sudden change in Fischler’s tone. This is clearly the result of Bettman and Kelly meeting in Newark, and Bettman calling off the dogs.
I think that Kelly soon will be running circles around Fischler and the other NHL hacks.
He could play “good guy” to Chelios’ “bad guy"…
I can see the headlines: “Chelios made a big mistake in picking Kelly! The guy is progressive!”
I thought Kelly acquitted himself quite well on HNIC Saturday. Actually, I was surprised he came off more like a hockey fan than a high-powered attorney (like Bettman).
I see no reason why Bettman and Kelly cannot build an agreeable, professional relationship. If Bettman will listen to him, maybe together they can improve the prospects for everyone associated with the NHL.

Conciliation on both sides is a must for the league’s survival. Another work stoppage or even the serious threat of one could kill this league. I think there’s enough moderates on both sides who outnumber the “hawks” and will be more inclined to work together in the next round of labour talks.

One week “The Maven” is foretelling doom if Kelly’s hired as PA director, the next he’s afraid Kelly will be brainwashed by Chris Chelios and Eric Lindros, the next he’s smooching Kelly’s backside for being “an amiable sort” and meeting with Gary Bettman.
Guess Stan got his orders from “Bettman Inc” to back off the Kelly bashing after that amiable chat Gary had with Paul last week.
