Penalties For Staged Fights

from the CP via TSN,
The NHL’s general managers are hoping to cut down on staged fights.
The GMs would like to see a 10-minute misconduct penalty assessed to players who drop their gloves right after a faceoff.
Referees would also be able to hand out that penalty in other instances where they believe players have engaged in an appointment fight.
added 3:17pm, from Damian Cox of The Spin Blog at the Toronto Star,
There are those who believe all fighting in hockey is wonderful.
There are those who believe it’s all idiotic.
Then there are those that believe some fighting in hockey is necessary and meaningful while just some of the fights are idiotic.
The NHL knew it couldn’t please the first crowd or the second, so it’s going for the third.

What’s another 10 minutes when a lot of the fighters only play 5 minutes a game anyways?
Don’t mock the severity of splinter-butt syndrome (aka “lower body aggravated soreness”). It might be a deterrent ...

I am all for this in theory. But in practice, I am not sure how exactly you can make this a rule that the refs can try and call fairly. I don’t like seeing fights between the enforcers generally. I do like seeing a good fight, but not between two guys who only fill that role.

Yippee. Bettman gets what he wants: the appearance of cleaning up the sport for the American television viewing public. The GMs get what they want: no real substantial change at all…And Don Cherry gets to have hockey’s traditions remain in tact, sorta.

wait a second.. I thought the number of viewers in the US was horrible? This change is not targeted at the US.. I just cannot believe that..
Most of the fighting outrage Ive observed is from the Canada media, indicating various minor league accidents of late.

True. Why cater to a market that doesn’t exist? I don’t think that more non-Canadians would watch hockey if only there were less fighting - I think that some non-Canadians like fighting and some think it’s stupid, pretty much in line with other groups of fans.
To say this is done “to appeal to the American market” goes against all the Nascar “fans” who only watch hoping for a spectacular crash - Americans will watch hockey if they like it, understand it, and can actually see it regularly on television or live. I don’t see a groundsweel of American fans begging for hockey to be less violent so they can watch it all the time safely.

This is stupid.
In lieu of dropping ‘em right off the faceoff, you’ll see a bunch of “meetcha at the flagpole at 19:30.”
Idiots.

Yeah, I agree. While I agree with the sentiment, I don’t know how you’ll put it in the rulebook.

No one has ever accused Bettman of understanding hockey or its fans.

Interesting that Bettman gets the blame, when it is the GMs who raised the issue…
(neither a hater nor a lover of bettman. he has an impossible job.)

Excluding fighting has been Bettman’s baby for too long now for his name not to be mentioned.
