Penguins Need Guerin Back

from Kevin Allen of Mucking and Grinding at USA TODAY,
The Penguins don’t have much room under the cap—roughly $8 million— and they have Rob Scuderi, Hal Gill, Fuslan Fedotenko as unrestricted free agents. Guerin earned $4 million last season, and they can’t pay him that. They also (could) be reluctant to give him a multiple-year deal. But I suspect that both the Penguins and Guerin both realize this a a good fit, and this deal should get done.

The Penguins have $8 million left for eight players. I think they can keep two of Guerin, Fedotenko, and Scuderi.

The backup goaltender will probably be John Curry, who would be promoted from the Baby Pens. That is, unless he has a horrid training camp.

Well...if the pens don’t want to pay curry more than what he’s making they have boerkhoel (sp) and theissen. I know Garon is gone...it’s now fleury’s job solely.
As for this lot to re-sign...I’d only sign scuderi, everyone else is replaceable for cheaper with AHL talent or free agent gems. It’s not a bad idea to try and pick the bones of some falling franchises like phoenix, tampa, and florida with a trade or signing (more likely trade). If the right pieces are there David Booth would look mighty good on the wing.
But I would get Fedotenko back for the playoffs because he’s a good luck charm...but has never really played a complete season at peak.

scuderi is the key here. guerin wont be signed in pittsburgh until scuderi makes his move. if scuderi signs, guerin takes a major pay cut or moves on. if scuderi leaves, which is probably what will happen, guerin resigns for about the same deal.
scuderi is going to make beaucoup dollars. i wouldnt be surprised at all if someone signed him for upwards of 4 mil. if the pens can sign him, they’re gonna be lucky.
i also wouldnt be surprised if ray shero made a move in the next few days to clear some cap space up.

Kukla’s Korner is always a free service for readers, but it costs some money to maintain. If you’re ever in a position to donate a few dollars to help out, we’d be very appreciative.

Best possible solution for the Pens would be Guerin on a 1 year deal for roughly 2.5 million, Scuderi for a multi-year deal for 2.5 million or less, and then a backup goalie for under 1 million.
That would put the Pens in a decent position with enough cap space to be able to make callups and a possible waiver wire claim or small money signing (something like a Ziggy or Adams at under 1 million).
Signing Fedetenko would be great, but it doesn’t really seem like reality at this point.
