Penguins Sign Brent Johnson

The Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins have signed goaltender Brent Johnson to a one-year contract, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.

Johnson, 32, played 21 games with the Washington Capitals, finishing with a record of 12-6-2 during the 2008-09 season.  The veteran goaltender recorded a .908 save percentage along with a 2.81 goals-against average.

Great signing for the Pens. Johnson is a solid backup who can play 15 games if Fleury stays healthy or step in and play 30+ if he gets hurt. Its not a knock on Curry who people seem pretty high on, but we’ve seen how important the backup goalie can be in the last 2 seasons, and I’d rather see it be a veteran than a rookie.

You Pens fans do realize that he is a direct decendent of Sid Abel, as in ABEL to Yzerman, correct?

That’s right folks, the Red Wings are putting a man into deep cover *evil laugh*.

Excellent signing. Arguably the best among the affordable.

I’m (doubting but) hoping it’s a two-way deal so my favorite former BU Terrier can still battle it out for the backup job.

Apparently a one-year, one-way deal worth $525,000.

Sid Abel began his professional hockey career in Pittsburgh, with the Hornets.  His father played a few games between the pipes for the Pens… seems like he was destined to end up in the ‘burgh.

Signing the best available backup goalie is always a “must” for a contender, but even moreso this year where the Olympics compacts the schedule and back-to-backs are more frequent. Pittsburgh starts with one October 2 and October 3 against the Rangers and Islanders. What a great move by the Pens to keep inexperienced Curry from possibly having to carry last year’s Cup on his back!

Sid Abel’s bigger legacy is in Detroit and his number’s retired in Detroit.
