RDS (French) is reporting that both Miroslav Satan and Ruslan Fedotenko have been signed by the Pittsburgh Penguins—Satan for $3.5 million and Fedotenko for $2.25 million.

Update 1:51pm ET: TSN confirms with the same details.

Update 2:38pm ET: Press release from the Penguins, re. Fedotenko, is below.

Update 3:15pm ET: Press release on Satan, also now added below.

Fedotenko

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Ruslan Fedotenko to a one-year contract, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.

Fedotenko, 29, scored 33 points (16 goals, 17 assists) in 67 games with the New York Islanders during the 2007-08 season.  He led the team and registered a career-high with eight power play goals.  Fedotenko equaled a career-high three-game goal streak from February 12th to 16th, scoring four goals, including two game-winners.  He finished fourth on the Islanders with 104 hits.

Fedotenko has played 53 career playoff games, scoring 17 points (13 goals, four assists).  He was a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning when they captured the Stanley Cup following the 2003-04 season.  Fedotenko tied for the team lead in those playoffs with 12 goals, including both goals in the 2-1 series-clinching victory vs. the Calgary Flames.  The 6-2, 195-pound native of Kiev, Ukraine scored a career-high 41 points (26 goals, 15 assists) during the 2005-06 season with the Lightning.

Fedotenko was originally signed as an undrafted free agent for the Philadelphia Flyers in August 1999.  He made his NHL debut with the Flyers during the 2000-01 season and played one more season with the team before being traded to Tampa Bay on June 21st, 2002.  After four seasons with Tampa Bay, he signed as a free agent with the New York Islanders on July 4th, 2007.  Fedotenko has played seven NHL seasons totaling 239 points (123 goals, 116 assists) in 523 career games.

Satan

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Miroslav Satan to a one-year contract, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.

Satan, 33, skated in 80 games with the New York Islanders last season, registering 41 points (16 goals, 25 assists).  He was tied for third on the club in scoring and finished second on the team with four game-winning goals.  Satan collected 13 points on the power play (five goals, eight assists) ranking fourth on the club, while adding four game-winning tallies.

“Miroslav brings skill, experience and size to our hockey team,” Shero said.  “He is a player that has put up very good offensive numbers in the NHL.  By playing with our core group of forwards he should only be able to build upon those numbers and provide offense for our hockey club.”

The 6-3, 195-pound right forward has recorded 25-or-more goals in nine of his 12 seasons and scored 30-or-more goals on four occasions.  He posted a career-high 40 goals during the 1998-99 season and a career-high 75 points (26 goals, 49 assists) during the 2003-04 season, both with Buffalo.  He has appeared in 80-or-more games in eight NHL seasons, including in each of the past four years.  Satan has skated in 56 career playoff games, scoring 38 points (15 goals, 23 assists), including a trip to the Stanley Cup Final following the 1998-99 season.

The 6-3, 191-pound native of Topolcany, Slovakia was originally drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the fifth round (111th overall) of the 1993 NHL Draft.  Satan has played 12 seasons in the NHL totaling 685 points (337 goals, 348 assists) in 947 career games.

Maybe not as much value as Hossa, but solid and cheaper. If they can manage to add Naslund or Jagr, they’ll be as dangerous offensively as last season.

They probably don’t have the cap room for Naslund/Jagr unless they trade away someone—Sydor maybe? Overall, I like the upside of these guys. If Crosby/Malkin can turn them into 20-30 goal guys, a la Sykora, then they’ll be great value.

Posted by penguinsfan  on  07/03  at  01:59 PM

Well that gives the pens their top 2 lines.
Fedotenko, Sid, Satan
Dupuis Malkin Sykora
Add in Staal, kennedy, talbot, and whoever makes it from the AHL, the pens are once again a solid team.

Posted by Kevin from pittsburgh  on  07/03  at  02:02 PM

Well.  That’s two Atlantic Division teams now.  I presume that he’ll go to the Rags next, then the Flyers.

... and then, finally, everyone’s dream will come true, and he’ll join the Devils.

Posted by Michael Turner from Columbus, OH  on  07/03  at  02:14 PM

Pens have 2.9 left in cap room. That would pay for half of Jagr or Naslund.

My Lines so far right now:

Dupuis Crosby Satan
Fedotenko Malkin Sykora
Kennedy Staal Godard
Stone Talbot Filewich

My Blog, I am just getting started What do you think about that line?  That fourth line is going to be a bit tricky to fill right now

Posted by Ryan from Pittsburgh  on  07/03  at  02:34 PM

they need to dump a defender (sydor) and then sign either naslund/demitra ... these two aren’t gonna get it done even if they’re playing with crosby and malkin

Posted by Justin from PA  on  07/03  at  02:35 PM

I cant believe we dont spend the extra two million and get demitra and naslund......

This is ridiculous, I just dont understand the logic in signing a player who has had one 40 pt (41) season in his life for 2.5 million....What role can this guy fill…

It sure isn’t Adam Halls, because he doenst want 2.5 million....

Justin you are so correct....please get rid of Sydor...hes 2.5 million that we dont need too

Posted by Aaron  on  07/03  at  02:42 PM

You know what is a good comparison to what the penguins seem to be doing right now....

Using a method that another Pittsburgh organization (Pirates) has used to put themselves in the basement of their league for so many years..

SIGNING HAS BEENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Aaron (2x)  on  07/03  at  02:46 PM

Naslund has already informed the Pens that he will be signing elsewhere.  Jagr - not gonna happen.  Look for us to round out our roster with Jason Williams or Matt Cooke. Check out nhlnumbers.com.  The Pens have 3.839 left in available cap space and 2.5 more once they move Sydor.  They will bring in another winger with that trade but there will be no major signings.  Shero will want to leave room for a deadline trade if the Pens are in position for another run.

Posted by Chris from Pittsburgh  on  07/03  at  02:47 PM

I heard on the radio this morning a great point and I think it applies to this situtation. Ryan Malone is a great player, but his stats are rather padded with playing with Crosby and Malkin.  I am sure Crosby and Malkin can help raise the point totals for both Satan and Fedotenko.

Posted by Ryan from Pittsburgh  on  07/03  at  02:49 PM

Im sure Satan will do fine....He can score without Crosby or Malkin…

Chris I must ask where you heard this, because Naslund was still interested about 15 minutes ago

Posted by Aaron  on  07/03  at  02:51 PM

Shero did offer Naslund the money, but he rejected it. The reports say that signing Satan/Fedotenko was plan B when the Naslund offer didn’t fly.

Aaron, the reason we didn’t get Dmietra and Naslund is because we aren’t willing to go more than one year with them.  That would strap us moving forward and Malkin’s contract kicks into the cap next year.

Posted by Chris from Pittsburgh  on  07/03  at  02:54 PM

Chris thats fine, but the cap also goes up next year....

And whats an extra 1.5 for demitra???

Anyone thinking Sydor to Tampa after they drop Boyle..HAHA

Or Sydor to Alanta for Christensen and Colby...haha

Posted by Aaron  on  07/03  at  02:57 PM

I would take colby and christienson back for sydor haha I’d be fired up!

Posted by Ryan from Pittsburgh  on  07/03  at  03:01 PM

We assume the cap will go up next year but we will also have to resign Stall, Talbot, Kennedy, Goligoski.  Believe me I would love to see Naslund back in a Pens uniform.  And yes, we will see Sydor’s contract moved.

Anybody here any possible destinations or return possibilities?

Posted by Chris from Pittsburgh  on  07/03  at  03:01 PM

Do NOT even suggest bringing Christensen back for the love of God.  I like the Jason Williams idea, I just don’t think that when he said he wanted a proven winger to start the reason he had Fedotenko in mind.  The cap will go up again and it will benefit the Pens, especially w/ Crosby and Malkin taking pay cuts.  They still have to sign a proven winger if they want to come out of the east again this year.

Posted by Justin from PA  on  07/03  at  03:04 PM

1-year deals. Smart. Think of it this way: Satan’s recently twice scored 30 goals playing with nobo..er...Mike Comrie and Yashin. If he has a career year with Crosby (which is eminently possible) and cashes in elsewhere in the summer of 09-10, a trend could start.

Hey, Pittsburgh’s stronger at both forward and D than they were at season’s open last year (Satan, Fedotenko >> Recchi, Christensen). Plus, most of the East has either treaded water (phil, wash, Mon, Bos) or gotten worse (cough, Rangers).

Posted by Steve  on  07/03  at  03:10 PM

Look at it this way.

What other team in the NHL can claim that they have SATAN and GOD(ard) on their team???

Posted by Chris from Pittsburgh  on  07/03  at  03:11 PM

I like your style Chris.

Nice.

You really don’t want Williams. Yes, he’s got a powerful slapshot, about that’s about all he brings.

He’s undersized, isnt especially responsible defenseively, and cant hold the line on the PP.

He was overpaid by the Hawks, and I’m sure he’s not gonna back down from that kind of money these days. If you could get him for 2M or under, then go for it. But not at the $3-5M he’s gonna demand, especially if that’s all thats left of your cap space.

Posted by Nate A from metro Detroit  on  07/03  at  03:37 PM

Thanks for the insight Nate.  I haven’t seen much to get excited about with Williams myself but I have heard that the Pens are in discussions.

Posted by Chris from Pittsburgh  on  07/03  at  03:41 PM

Pens are closer to signing with Cooke rather than Williams with anoffer of 2 years 1.6 million on the table apparently.  Looks like they’ve found Ruutu’s replacement.

Posted by Justin from PA  on  07/03  at  03:44 PM

Congrats Pensfans!

We hope to see you again in the finals next year!

grin

Posted by Osrt  on  07/03  at  03:48 PM

p.s. yea, you don’t want Williams.

Posted by Osrt  on  07/03  at  03:49 PM

No offense Osrt but I hope we don’t see you in the finals next year.  I hate to say it but it could be a bigger a**whooping than we took this year.

Posted by Chris from Pittsburgh  on  07/03  at  03:53 PM

Jason Williams wasn’t a bad player until he got the concussion - Raffi Torres, I think?

Maybe now that Torres was traded he wants out of the division and you can use that to drive down his price!

(He was also very good at shootouts, but you’d be better off spending larger amounts of cash elsewhere.)

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  07/03  at  04:11 PM

he might be going to philly inwhich there is a third team that would take knuble or gagne off the flyers hands

I have no problems with that cheese

Posted by Osrt  on  07/03  at  04:16 PM

I’d take a Sydor for Armstrong trade even up. Lose the big contract in Sydor, get back a spark-plug type player in Armstrong and make room for Goligoski should he be ready. Any word on Taffe??
