Both of the following stories were written before Game 5 started, but now I can post them since the Wings won…

I’ll go out on a limb and say yes.
If the Detroit Red Wings beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup final for the second consecutive year, did the 2008-09 season actually take place?
Hmm, that one is a little tougher.
I presume since I watched about 1,000 NHL games this year it actually did take place. So I guess the answer is yes. The thing is I don’t get the sense the Penguins are in a significant better position to beat the Red Wings this year than they were a year ago, assuming, of course, the Red Wings dispose of the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference final as expected.

Would the Penguins be where they are now if they still had Hossa and less depth? We’ll never know for sure. Sidney Crosby scored 6 goals last spring, he’s got 14 now. Malkin had 22 points last post-season, this time around he’s got 28 in fewer games. Crosby and Makin have carried the weight, showing that the decision for depth over top-flight skill has apparently been a good one so far.
