People Are Watching The Series With Everything

from the Vancouver Province via the National Post,

...Add it all up and if an evil genius conceived of a plan to systematically destroy the NHL, he couldn’t do worse than Bettman has done. But after taking more shots than Sonny Corleone in the toll booth, the NHL seems to have finally reversed the trends of the last 14 years and has taken huge steps in rebuilding both its image and its brand.

Who knows, if everything goes right, it make even get back to the place it occupied 14 years ago when the Vancouver Canucks met the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

You mean the same 94 final that had only 2.5 national rating on Espn?

Thank god New York is not in the finals between Joba and Martinez headlines dominating everything here with football minicamps.

I take issue with a point made in that article. He calls the teams in Nashville, Phoenix, and Florida ‘joke franchises’. I take issue with that.

It’s insulting. It’s insulting to the fans in those respective cities, and it’s insulting to the fans of other teams that aren’t necessarily in the ‘Cradle of Hockey’.

Sure, everything isn’t perfect in those markets. But I believe they can improve. It’s incredibly provincial to act as if certain cities deserve teams while others don’t. The American sports fan is sophisticated enough to appreciate hockey in a nontraditional market.

One of the biggest reason is that those markets may be a bit weaker is because the teams haven’t had much success on the ice. If the teams improve, I’m sure the market would too. Just look at places such as Dallas, Washinton, and Tampa. They’re non-traditional markets as well, but success on the ice has led to a stronger hockey market. I sure hope this clown doesn’t consider those teams joke-franchises as well.

Are people in Canada still refusing to watch because there are no Canadian teams involved? As for knocking the Nasvilles of the world…no one in America cares about Vancouver. A Nashville/NYR final would get better ratings that a Canuck/Rangers final. I’m sure of that.

Canadian article. Nashville is a joke franchise. Nothing new here. This happens daily. This will never change. We aren’t a joke, but to them we will always be.

Most funny thing of all is Nashville drew a higher rating than New York in the ratings for at least game four for this final while New York placed 36th among US markets.

When I think “joke franchise,” one team comes to mind:

The Toronto Maple Leafs (Leaves).  smile
