SUNRISE, Fla. Florida Panthers General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that Head Coach Peter DeBoer has been relieved of his coaching duties effective immediately.
“These decisions are always tough to make, but we felt strongly that it was the right time to make a change,” said Tallon. “We need to go in a new direction with a fresh approach and philosophy as it relates to our head coaching position. The entire Panthers organization would like to thank Peter for his hard work and service to this franchise and wish him all the best in the future.”
The Florida Panthers will have no further comment today.

Fired the wrong guy.
Florida’s problem is clear; the guys on the team aren’t good enough because they’ve drafted horribly, then traded their high picks for spare parts.
The GM’s relatively new, so can’t be blamed for, say, drafting somebody named Kendall McCardle over about 5 impact players in the 2005 draft. However, he did waive an all-star making little money at the beginning of the year, which is kinda/sorta a big deal.
What Florida did not lack was structure, effort or discipline which is about all a coach can reasonably be asked to give any team. They don’t get beat with Xs and Os; they get overwhelmed by stronger, faster, more creative opponents. Herb Brooks couldn’t have beaten Ecuador with that squad.
DeBoer’s not Clouston, who had no idea how to manage his players, either on the ice or in the locker room (Clouston’s roster was no winner either, but playing 35 year old defensemen in unfamiliar assignments and inspiring half the core to request a trade is incompetence). Here’s hoping Deboer gets another chance soon.
