from TSN,
Former NHL player Peter Zezel passed away at a Toronto hospital on Tuesday, after a long battle with a blood disorder.
Zezel, 44, spent the last 10 years being treated for haemolytic anaemia, a rare disorder in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than the body can replace them.
His family released the following statement:
“Peter will forever be remembered as a great teammate and a wonderful individual, who touched the lives of many both on and off the ice. In his typical character of generosity, Peter has donated his organs through the Trillium Gift of Life Network. We would like to thank all of Peter’s friends and family for their support and we ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

Condolences to the family.
I loved the way he took face-offs, lifting the other players stick and kicking it back to his teammates. I remember trying to do the same during my games. Thanks Peter.
Too young.

He was great on face-offs. One of the best ever, probably.
Also, great choice to donate his organs. I hope that however I die someday, I will be able to help others out in the same way.

Amen. Rest in Peace, Peter.
I had a chance to meet him when I was a young lad with my brother. We were in church on Christmas (Jan 7) and as the Leafs were playing at Maple Leaf Gardens that night, Zezel was at the service. By brother and I had a chance to meet him, and he was gracious and kind. He even invited us to watch the Leafs practice, we were late for Christmas lunch as we went and sat behind the Leafs’ bench. And to top it off he had his dad bring two of Zezel’s sticks out to us to keep.
Peter was a true gentleman and this a great loss for the hockey world.
