‘Phony’ Teams Are Gone

from Justin Bourne at The Hockey News,

Playoffs have brought to light a revolutionary new breed of tough guy in the NHL: The Post-Whistle Phony.

Let me preface my thoughts with a disclaimer. I myself do not claim to be a tough guy on the ice. I periodically get angry. I occasionally chirp at chumps. But my most common rebuttal holds somewhere along the line of “Yes, I realize you could kick my ass - does your coach know you’re out here?”

And I know my type exists in the NHL today. There are guys like Jonathan Toews, players who play the game to win, without the slightest interest in a high-schoolesque testosterone-off.

But, there are certain requirements to be a hockey player. You need to stick up for your teammates. You may have to fight someone tougher than you (read: wrestle) because they did something stupid and you’re the first one on the scene of the crime – even though you are acutely aware this could end badly (read: my nose is now crooked). You have to demonstrate your team’s unity.

I don’t often agree with Bourne’s blogs, but this time I do.  He makes a good case for bashing the post-whistle phonies, the guys that will do the face-washing and snow showers knowing the linesman is nearby to prevent him from having to defend himself for being a complete tool.

Man up, or shut up. (and by shut up, I mean cut the crap)

Too many guys feel far too comfortable doing this, knowing they will not pay the price at the hands of the refs, nor at the hands of opposing players.  If you do want to drop the gloves with these pests, they often skate away and make you look like the agressor.  Thus, trying to stomp out these pests usually costs your team more than it helps.

However, I point my finger at the meddling of the officials.  There needs to be consistent enforcement of pests.  This would trump the need of a team to defend itself, which should make you happy if you’re against fighting.

If you’re for fighting, you should take the opposite side, in which there are less regulations against pest-control.

What we don’t need is this stance somewhere in the middle that make the league look weak, while allowing agitators to rule the game, and essentially BE the game.  Why bother making nice plays if all you have to do is goad another player into coming after you and earning your team a powerplay?
