Players Back Recent NHL Suspensions

from Pierre LeBrun of the CP via Yahoo,

Players around the league have roundly applauded hefty suspensions to Philadelphia Flyers forwards Steve Downie and Jesse Boulerice this season. The message is clear: hits to the head will no longer be tolerated.

“That kind of stuff is crazy,” said veteran winger Mark Recchi. “That’s stuff that doesn’t belong in the game. We’re a sport that allows fighting and you can vent your frustration by a fight if you want, but it’s a clean, hard game and that stuff doesn’t belong.

“I think (NHL disciplinarian) Colin Campbell has done the right thing.”

Can’t fathom why the players wouldn’t support the penalties. It’s their lives and their livelihood that are at stake.

On other sites, I’ve questioned why the NHLPA hasn’t been pro-active in this. It’s their members getting injured.

Maybe new NHLPA staffing will help.

I agree with Ted.  This issue has been at the forefront since the lockout ended.  Why hasn’t the NHLPA been “outspoken” before now?
And as much as I dislike Ruutu, he has a great point.  I could totally see Pronger making one of these headshots and not getting the 20+ games that another, lesser player would get.
