Players That May Be Moved

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
Last season, Marian Hossa was the crème de la crème of a group of players on the market leading up to the 2008 trade deadline. His acquisition by Pittsburgh helped propel the Penguins to their first Stanley Cup finals since 1992.
This season, the forward is ensconced in Detroit, where he signed as a free agent, something well-remembered by his friends in Pittsburgh. But for teams looking to add such a bauble before the March 4 deadline, well, the cupboard is looking pretty bare.
Here’s a list of the top players who could be in play between now and the trade deadline.
Jay Bouwmeester, Florida Panthers
Last season, Atlanta GM Don Waddell did his best to sign Hossa to a long-term deal, but could not. Because the Thrashers were a draft-lottery team, the decision to trade Hossa was an easy one. Not so for Florida GM Jacques Martin when it comes to the talented Bouwmeester.

Silly Garth ... this is ESPN! They have no need of your thing called “logic.” ![]()
I could see Kovalchuck being moved more easily if he was in his last year, so the team wouldn’t have that cap commitment on their books for next year. It would let them be more flexible.
I would be shocked if Sullivan was moved. I can see why a team would love to have him, but after waiting so long to get back on the ice I can see the organization and fans wanting him to stay around. They love him in Nashville.

Crap. Sometimes I forget to check my logic at the door when entering the internet.
In all seriousness, I agree with you, Baroque, about Ilya. On top of cap commitment, if you’re trading for him this year, you’r not just getting a playoff rental, and thus the asking price would presumably be higher than if he were in the last year of his deal.
I can’t see too many teams really going after him this year, unless they are someone who see themselves “on the verge” this year, planning on making a big playoff run next year.
I have to assume that in this cap era, trading “name” players will likely be reserved for rental situations or the off-season (ie. if Lacavalier is traded to Montreal, I think it would most likely be in the off-season, and if Montreal performs poorly in the playoffs…or comes *thisclose* and feel like they need some big name to push them over the top…maybe between the end of the playoffs and the draft?)

If Lecavalier goes to Montreal, the city will burn.
I don’t mean rioting and such idiocy - the entire city will spontaneously combust out of sheer joy at having a local kid on the ice in their colours.

Lots of interesting names, but I have to smile at the idea of Crosby and Kovolchuk playing together. The Pens have THIRTEEN players signed next year for $46 million. How are they going to absorb Kovy’s $6.4?
The only way that Sid and Ilya will be playing together is if they’re both traded to LA.
