Playoff Fever In Toronto?

from Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star,
“It’s not over yet,” Phaneuf said after practice. “There’s a lot of games left. We are where we are, but we have to do our best to get points and make a push for the playoffs. ... If teams lose and you win a few, you’re right there.”
The Leafs have 47 points, 10 behind eighth-place Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference, and somehow need to total somewhere in the 93-point range, the norm for an eighth-place team in the East the past few seasons.
It’s a tall order, to be sure, but the recent eye-popping trades have instilled new hope and confidence, bolstered by the team’s 3-0 win over New Jersey on Tuesday in its first post-blockbuster outing.

As a Leaf fan I have to say I agree with Mark on this one…
At the same time, it was refreshing to watch the team play last game - putting the win aside - to witness the absence of a few players was a thrill in itself.
Is it possible, sure - but they are going to need a ton of help… It never hurts to believe though, and hopefully the home crowds being that enthusiasm with them.
Either way, fans of this team are thrilled that a change is happening and most are aware this change is not yet complete.

Burke has played this out perfectly.
He spends a large chunk of cash on Koms in the off-season, Koms goes down for the season a few weeks ago. Instead of sagging off into the sunset with the worst record in hockey and no draft pick to speak of, he grabs an even more high-profile/high-cost/low return defesemen to distract Leaf nation.
Speaking for myself in the midst of Leaf nation, I ain’t fallin for no banana in the tailpipe.

Sometimes your team makes you blind, I get that. Toronto has won one game after coming off their most recent slump, before they start planning the parade route they might want to see if they can win a couple, or 10. They will need to win 20 to 22 of the remaining 25 to stand a chance.
Leafs fans are crazy, I’m married to one. Burke’s comments about still aiming for the playoffs is just going to cause more disappointment when fans come back to earth and realize he had to be talking about next year.
