Praise For Poile

from Edward Fraser at the Hockey News,

When I first heard about [Dan] Ellis’ new deal, I assumed the $3.5 million was his annual salary, not the two-year total. Even at $3.5 per, Ellis wouldn’t have been overpaid as a starting goalie.

So, in other words, at $1.5 million next season and $2 million in 2009-10, Ellis is a steal. And Poile, the only GM the Preds have ever known, should be applauded for the move.

The Ellis inking wasn’t the lone notch on Poile’s bedpost this off-season, either.

I don’t know what kind of incriminating photos David Poile has of Dan Ellis, but whatever it is, it has to be nasty.

No kidding. Do Ellis and Sammy have the same agent and/or private investigator? wink

But, seriously, the kid and his agent must have been drugged before they agreed to that contract. That’s almost as big a steal as Kenny getting Ozzie for a cap hit of just $1.417M/year for three years.

Kudos to Poile. But a smack upside the head to Ellis and his agent.

He’ right that Ellis probably would have fetched much more on the open-market, but those GMs willing to give a huge contract to a guy with 24 career wins are pretty ridiculous.

Fortunately/unfortunately GMs around the league know Dan Ellis’ situation more than you apparently do. If they thought as you did then Poile should have traded his rights away in a heartbeat.

Ellis is a fabulous goalie, but has health issues - he can’t keep weight on. Last year he barely made it through 40 games in the regular season (playing every other game and every third game for a while there) and i don’t know how he would have done with a long playoff run. He drops between 10-15 lbs PER GAME.

I think he got a little home-town discount and a little ‘heath uncertainty’ discount.

Don’t get me wrong. Poile is awesome. No argument there.

I’m not saying that he isn’t a great goalie!  My point is that it should take more than 24 wins for any goaltender to prove himself as a legitimate #1 in the NHL who can have millions of cap dollars committed to him.

You’re completely right, Jeff.  There’s no shortage of goalies who played better for longer than Ellis before suddenly forgetting how to catch a puck.
