Predicting The Trophy Winners

from Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun,

Here’s a rundown on the awards races as the season winds down.

Vezina Trophy

Injuries have pretty much taken Brodeur and Roberto Luongo out of the equation. Kiprusoff is just eight wins away from tying Brodeur’s single-season record for victories (48) but his goals against (2.88) is lofty. Lundqvist, Nabokov, Backstrom, Ward and Mason all are having fine seasons.

SUN PICK: Tim Thomas (Bruins). He entered play yesterday dominating the league stats, ranking fourth in wins (30) and first in save percentage (.932) and goals against (2.06).

Pretty poor and one dimensional article.  The author essentially looks at one stat per trophy.  For example:

The Selke:  I want to know how many takeaways and hits the forward delivers, as well as their participation on PK.  Possibly even faceoff % if it’s a center.

Norris:  Same thing for the defensemen.  Scoring is important, and the puck-moving/scoring defenseman is as important as ever.  To be fair, he mentioned +/- as well as points, but what about blocked shots?  Hits?

The choices all made were the fairly obvious ones with little research or higher order thought.

Still, Paul, thank you for finding all the interesting digs!

Can I win the trophy for “Cares the least about what Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun predicts”?

As MMarkK states, pretty poor and one-dimensional article.  But such a thing coming from the Canadian media?  Nah, couldn’t be.
