President Bush Calls Modano

from the Dallas Morning News,
The Stars center was on the ice playing the Phoenix Coyotes when a call came from the White House. So he had to wait until Friday morning to take the call in which President Bush offered congratulations to Modano for becoming the all-time American-born point scorer in NHL history.
“He was great,” Modano said. “He just told me how special it was and how I should be proud.”

Oh, come on, leave the politics out of it. Regardless of how you feel about Bush, Modano seemed pretty thrilled about it and that’s what matters.

Agreed, and well he should be. I sure would be if I were in his shoes and got that call.
Regardless of how you feel about Bush
No one at KK knows how I feel about Bush because I’ve never posted my opinion and don’t intend to… now do I know how anyone who’s posted here feels about Bush. What I do “know” is that every President/politician/public figure is fair game for satire, and as satires go I think OTC came up with something quite clever and well-written — and worth my time to tell him so.

I agree, BTZ. I thought it was funny, and I don’t think Bush made the call as a publicity stunt. Honestly, the way hockey is covered by the MSM, this type of thing wouldn’t get a lot of publicity. I think the fact that Modano plays for a Texas team probably had something to do with it…as governor of Texas, Bush probably heard about Modano in the news all the time.

Ah, see, BobTheZee gets it. Alex and Evilpens…not so much.
If the same story had been posted eight years ago, I probably would have jumped in with a “dialog” about Bill Clinton thinking Modano was a cigar manufacturer and how he wanted some of those so he could “score” more himself.
In this case, my whole post was precipitated by the fact that Bush placed his original call during the game. It’s just classic Bush.
What amazes me these days is how humorless the right wingers are…except, of course, for Homer. I think he’s hilarious.

No, I got it, and I even laughed a bit. I was just trying to draw the focus away from politics and toward hockey.

Hmmm. Was this a sincere thank you from a true hockey fan or the ploy of a President who’s approval rating is in the toilet? Let’s see, the fact that he called Modano during a game may be a clue. In fact, I think this is the way the whole thing went down.
Bush to aide: Hey, I’ve gotta call this guy who scored more points than any American-born player. Get me this Mindanao guy on the phone.
Aide to Bush: Ah, I believe his name is Modano, sir. Mindanao is an island in the Philippines.
Bush: Oh, right. I knew that. So where’s this American-born guy at?
Aide: Modano plays for the Dallas Stars, sir.
Bush: Great! Get him on the phone. I love basketball.
Aide: Ah, sir, the Stars are a hockey team.
Bush: Okay, I knew that. The Stars are the team that guy from Cuba owns, right?
Aide: Well, actually, sir, I think you’re thinking of the Dallas Mavericks. They’re owned my Mark Cuban.
Bush: Whatever. Just get me that American-born guy on the phone.
Aide: (talking on the phone) Oh, okay, we’ll call back.
Aide to Bush: Sorry, sir, but the Stars are playing a game right now.
Bush: What? How’s that possible? They can’t possibly be playing right now. It’s still early morning in Mindanao.
Aide: (Sighs) Yes, sir. You’re right, as always, sir.
