from Scott Morrison at CBC,
What to do with Anaheim Ducks defenceman Chris Pronger, that is the question being pondered today?
It says here Pronger should be suspended for at least one game, maybe two.
Pronger is a great player to be sure, but he made a mistake Tuesday night, and it could have been a great big mistake, when he drove Tomas Holmstrom’s head into the glass in the second period of an eventual 5-0 loss to the Detroit Red Wings, the Ducks trailing by four at the time.

Speaking of Niedermayer and Pronger: both deserve at least a one-game suspension for their tag-team assault on Detroit’s Tomas Holmstrom. But I won’t be surprised if neither player receives supplementary discipline, mainly because Daniel Alfredsson got away with a similar cheapshot on Henrik Tallinder in Game 2 of the Sabres-Sens series.

I watched the game on Versus last night, saw the hit, and immediately thought it was a cheap shot. I’ve seen numerous replays which only serve to confirm my opinion that Pronger’s hit was both premeditated and with an intent to injure.
As a die-hard Wings fan, my opinion is obviously biased. That is why I spent a lot of time today reading MSM to get their take on the subject. NHL radio states that Pronger’s hit is worthy of suspension—but they dont think Campbell will hand one out because of the playoffs (i.e. if regular season yes). Interestingly, Helen Elliot, HHOF writer at the LATimes suggests two games. Jim Kelley at Sportsnet.ca also suggests supsension.
And now, Scott Morrision, a MSM whos opinion is most sensible supports suspension, but also suggests it may not happen.
Eric Duhatschek at the Globe and Mail, another MSM who generally gives good analysis did a write up on the game, but made slight mention of “the hit” in his story, other than to say it would probably be reviewed.
IMO the hit deserves a suspension. Had it been dueing a regular season game, there is little doubt they would issue the suspension. Because it is the playoffs, then probably no. Which raises an interesting dichotomy, that the NHL really wants to have a zero tolerance policy for interference in these playoffs (i.e. call the game the same in the postseaon as in regular season) but because it is the playoffs will be hesitant to mete out supplementary discipline that is deserved.
