Proposed New Rules

from Jim Kelley at Sports Illustrated,

New Rule No. 1: Regular-season standings must change

If a game is tied after the traditional 60 minutes, it is recorded as what it is: a tie. Should a team prevail with an extra goal in overtime or a shootout a team is awarded “bonus points,” points that are noted as such in the standings. In that scenario, there would be no “Win” recorded in the standings or personal coaching or goalie stats for a victory in extra-session time….

New Rule No. 2: Team options on the playoff seedings and formats

The higher seeds get a variety of options. It could be they retain the 2-2-1-1-1 format if they think it fits their travel plans or their view of what plays to the their strength (unbeatable at home or really good history of success after winning Game 1), or exploits an opponent’s weakness (poor road record or possible fatigue from a closing kick that could cause problems with a long-trip to a quick series start)....

I have a few ideas of my own:

Extend the no line change rule to any infraction by a team that stops play.  A penalty, an offsides, and icing, delay of game, etc.

Any team that causes more than 3 offsides in a period enters a bonus type situation where any other offsides play is automatically a penalty.  Each period restarts the count.

How about 2 points for a win and 0 points for a loss?

Adaptations from a soccer guy:

Regular win 3pts
OT/SO win 2 pts
OT/SO loss 1pt
Regular loss 0pts

All games will be worth 3pts, to me that’s ideal

First off, Bill Mahar might be R-rated, maybe even NC17, but not X-rated.

Second, I totally agree with Garth not matter what they do with overtime (be it 4-on-4 or 5-on-5) or the shootout. The winner gets 2 points loser 0.

At the very least every single game should have the same value, whether it’s a 2 point game or a 3 point game.
Which by the way I wouldn’t mind (better than what they have now) .
Regulation: win=3pts; lose=0pts.
OT(4-on-4) or Shootout:  win=2pts; lose=1pt.
See,every game has 3 ponts,SIMPLE.

I’ve wanted that since they got rid of ties - it just makes sense (even if you aren’t a soccer guy, as I am not).

And kill the shootout.  Hate it, hate it, HATE IT.

And anyone who wonders if fans can understand the standings if they get more complicated - a sports fan who can’t reliably add 2 to 2 and get 4 every time will sometimes acquire a phenomenal awareness of statistics, probability, and higher order math when discussing VORP, Corsi numbers, playoff odds, and other things - especially when they are pointing out where a blowhard MSM writer gets something totally and completely wrong.

Just because some sportswriters have problems with math doesn’t mean the fans will.  They might be even smarter than writers.  LOL

Yes. Also no overtime in the regular season. I have never been a fan of the 5 minute overtime.

NO SHOOT OUT! It is not a team effort therefore not a legit win.
