from the Toronto Sun,
As the league’s big shots gather on the picturesque Monterey Peninsula, an alteration in the NHL schedule will be first and foremost on the agenda.
The format expected to get proposed would see teams play their four division rivals six times each (24 total games); the other 10 teams in their conference four times each (40 total games); and the 15 teams in the other conference each once (15 total games), adding up to a total of 79 games.
The other three games are believed to be wild-card tilts against teams in the other conference, thereby completing the 82-game sked.
more * And I do hope the schedule is changed and doesn’t get turned down by some hardliners in the East.

I can see Devils’ GM Lou Lamoriello voting totally against it.

The 3 extra games should be reserved for games against either hardline rivals or top teams in each conference. Who wants to see Detroit and Ottawa battle each other now, instead of waiting 5 months to “maybe” see it in April? On the fly games can be scheduled, they can do it.

I like the idea of seeing a team from the other conference play at least once. I don’t might rivalries but I’m getting sick of seeing the same teams play over and over again. I want to see San Jose play Ottawa or Vancouver and New Jersey duking it out with their All-Star goalies once a year instead of waiting three years to play a certain team.

I’m someone leery of doing that after the Isles drew 8,000 for the Stars last night, after drawing 15,000 for the East earlier this season.
