from Jay Onrait of TSN,
A very good friend of mine sent me an e-mail over the weekend that pretty much sums up my feelings about this past weekend’s NHL Skills Competition:
“… half the guys looked like they didn’t care and the other half were trying these things that they couldn’t pull off. Ovechkin won because he put on a hat. It was bad.”
Exactly. Ovechkin won because he put on a hat.
What if Kovalev had put on a bra? Would that have tipped the scales in his favour?

Ovechkin won because he put on a hat.
Does that mean if Carrot Top could skate they’d name him MVP?

I would have voted for Ovie over the rest of the contestants based on the simple fact that he GETS IT. It’s for the fans, it should be fun, and it should be enjoyed by the participants and the spectators in equal amounts. Would it have killed one of the other participants to crack just a hint of a smile? If you don’t want to be there, that’s fine, but according to all the rhetoric coming out of the league office, if you’re selected, it’s part of the job (for which you are paid LARGE sums of money) to be there as a representative of your individual organization and the league as a whole. Swallow just a tiny bit of pride and dance.

Um...are people really complaining over the outcome of a trick shot tournament that means absolutely nothing? Wow. It wasn’t “bad.” It was entertaining and fun and silly, just like a trick shot tournament should be.

My point is that they didn’t want to be there with Ovie as the exception, and with the talent they have, it seemed they didn’t try as they’d rather not show themselves up.

As I posted on TSN:
I totally agree, I thought the breakaway competition would be more interesting as i regularly see guys on my team pull off better moves, and EVERY year in the NARCh skills competitions there are more inventive moves.
