Put The Red Line Back Into Play

from Ken Campbell of the Hockey News,
...Well, as far as I’m concerned, the verdict is in and removing the red line has been a failure.
None of us has anything more than anecdotal evidence on this one, but I believe that removing the center red line has stifled far more chances than it has created.
The long stretch passes that sprung talented forwards for breakaways are almost non-existent now. Instead, they’ve been replaced by a line of defenders in the neutral zone that has formed because teams are scared to death about giving up the breakaway pass.

I support this. I don’t think about it so much as a restriction on offense; rather it brings the area that needs to be defended up the ice. No longer having to keep guys out of the play defending the long bomb should help, I think.
He’s especially right that all that can be offered is anecdotal; hmm, wouldn’t it have been nice to test these rule changes independent of each other?

I can understand where Campbell’s coming from, but all the red line did was move the trap back ten feet.

That’s absurd; so his notion is to increase offense in the game by placing restrictions on how long a pass teams can make?
