Put Your Red Wings Tickets On Layaway

from John Hahn of DetroitRedWings.com,

The Red Wings announced today that they will begin offering season ticket holders a new noncredit-based payment option from eLayawaySPORTS when paying for their 2009-10 season tickets.

The Red Wings are the first NHL team, and only the third professional sports franchise, to offer the plan, which allows consumers to pay for season tickets over time with zero interest.

“A partnership with eLayawaySPORTS fits perfectly with the needs of our season ticket holders in these difficult economic times,” said Steve Violetta, Red Wings senior vice president of business affairs. “One of our goals is to make it as convenient as possible for all fans to enjoy the benefits of being a Red Wings’ season ticket holder and we’re very excited to be the first NHL club to offer this new customized payment option to our fans.”

I don’t get it…Most teams have a payment plan 3, 6, 10 payments deducted fron your bank account. There’s no interest involved….Anyone putting season tickets on a credit card has got issues…..

kevin:  Washington Capitals STH here… I use the “PowerPay” option for my season tickets, which splits my bill into 12 payments due on the 15th of every month April 2009 through March 2010.  It gets billed to my credit card which gets paid in full every month.  I have enough money to pay for the tickets in full today, but because this is effectively an interest-free loan, I’d rather keep my money in my bank account where I can earn interest on it.  So with the lousy interest rates these days, let’s say I’m saving about 1.5%, which is what I’m getting from ING Direct.  In addition, I wind up getting 1% cash back through my credit card.

So what kind of issues do I have, exactly…?  Other than the extra money on my hands, of course.  (Admittedly not a large sum, but even just 2% is higher than 0%, yeah?)

I will admit that I haven’t read the article fully, so I’m not sure how Detroit’s plan differs from ours, but this has been an option for several years for a Capitals’ STH.

According to the article, season ticket holders who take advantage of this opportunity pay a 1.9% transaction fee. But most notably, they don’t get their tickets until the plan is paid for IN FULL. Looks to me like the Red Wings don’t want to extend credit to their season ticket holders.

And by the way, if A2Y doesn’t adopt ‘Hahan’ (done in the voice of the bully kid of The Simpsons) as the new and completely accurate pronounciation of John Hahn’s name, I totally want my Kukla’s Korner membership dues back.

HaHa, fixed the Hahan spelling, but I may like it better than what it is,

I’m waiting for “Jiri Huddles” and “Dan Clearly”.

Here’s a better idea, Red Wings. Make the price a tad more affordable, eh?
