Putting The Hudler Story To Bed

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,
Wings general manager Ken Holland said today that the club will head to salary arbitration with forward Jiri Hudler on July 30 in Toronto. Hudler’s agent, Petr Svoboda, told Holland the 25-year-old left wing intends on playing in Russia next season.
“They have no intention of negotiating a settlement, they want the case heard before an arbitrator,’’ Holland said.
The NHL apparently will not be able to prevent Hudler from playing for Moscow Dynamo.
Hudler has made it clear he wants to play in the KHL, the Wings are not really fighting his decision so we can expect the end result, Hudler in the KHL and the Wings will add another forward by signing someone or making a trade.

Well I think he has to do something unless we’re going to play an extremely green rookie or career minor leaguer.
Datsyuk - Z - Holmstrom
Franzen - Filppula - Cleary
Leino - Helm - ???
Maltby - Abdelkader - Draper

Exactly, Heaton. If Lilja can play and they trade Lebda to get down to seven defensemen, the Wings would only have 20 guys on the roster. Here’s what that looks like as far as salaries go.
FORWARDS
Pavel Datsyuk: 6,700,000
Henrik Zetterberg: 6,083,333
Johan Franzen: 3,954,545
Valtteri Filppula: 3,000,000
Daniel Cleary: 2,800,000
Tomas Holmstrom: 2,250,000
Kris Draper: 1,583,333
Kirk Maltby: 883,333
Justin Abdelkader: 850,000*
Ville Leino: 800,000
Darren Helm: 599,444
DEFENSEMEN
Nicklas Lidstrom: 7,450,000
Brian Rafalaski: 6,000,000
Brad Stuart: 3,750,000
Niklas Kronwall: 3,000,000
Jonathan Ericsson: 900,000
Andreas Lilja: 1,250,000
Derek Meech: 483,333
GOALTENDERS
Chris Osgood: 1,416,666
Jimmy Howard: 716,666
ROSTER SIZE: 20
SALARY CAP: 56,800,000
PAYROLL: 54,450,653
CAP ROOM: 2,349,347
So, they would need two more forwards and they’d have a little over $2.3M with which to sign them. One minimum salary guy at $500k (D-Mac or Downey maybe?) and one third-line winger at anything under $1.8M would do it. The problem is that puts them in exactly the same position they were in last year…they can’t bring anyone up from GR unless someone with an equal or larger salary goes on IR.
As for the Hudler situation, it must be that the IIHF has agreed to give Happy a transfer card. Without that, he can’t play in the KHL.

Well, we really only need one. We spent all of last year with 12 forwards and 7 defensemen. It’s not ideal, but it would work.
But yes, we definitely need at least one more forward (though I would prefer two, because I know that Babs and Tick Tock have said they’d prefer to have abdelkader spend another year in GR)

Again, if Tick Tock does NOTHING until training camp and/or till the Christmas free-agent freeze, I’m completely comfortable with that. Besides, I think it’s more fun to see the kids from GR come up and earn their places with the big club.
