Questioning Team Canada

from Mike Boone of Habs Inside/Out,
Unless Canada is about to string together four Ws, there are going to be a lot of questions asked about this team’s personnel.
Are Pronger and Scott Niedermayer better than Mike Green?
Are Jarone Iginla and Corey Perry better than Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos?
Is Ryan Getzlaf better than Brad Richards?
Is Joe Thornton the worst money player in the history of hockey?

Have to agree with you Nathan. I think Canada’s roster is constructed well enough to win a gold medal, but last night they just did not play up to their expected level. Not to mention, in the few instances they did, Miller was on his game and handled it.

Are Pronger and Scott Niedermayer better than Mike Green?
Pronger = NO, Neidermayer = YES
Green will not help defensive zone coverage, c’mon people be realistic here!
Are Jarone Iginla and Corey Perry better than Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos?
Iginla = YES, absolutely should be on this team and should be getting more ice time!
Perry = NO, and should not see the ice until he is ready to actually effin try!
Is Ryan Getzlaf better than Brad Richards?
As Nathan said above, YES! Not even close.
Is Joe Thornton the worst money player in the history of hockey?
NO
Patrice Bergeron played 5:27 last night, while Jeff Carter watched the game on TV.
Carter should be on this team, Bergeron should not - but since Bergeron does not play it has no impact.
Can they win? YES… they just have to do it.

In fairness to the Canadians, they are the top dog. When you are the top, you build your team with what you think are going to be the best players, the best combinations. Arguments can be made that Perry and Bergeron should not be on this team and that Stamkos, Carter, Lecavalier and St. Louis should. Green shouldn’t be. No question on that one. I do believer Pronger should.
But debating the roster decisions of the Canadians is the lesser point. They are the best team on paper. The other teams, knowing that the canucks are the top dogs, built their teams in hopes of countering what Canada brought. Recall how many people including myself questioned the team announced by Brian Burke? Turns out he had a plan all along. He knew that win, he’d have to beat the Canadians. They went for size and skill, he countered with speed, skill and git. Any excessively fast team will give this Canadian team trouble. But had Yzerman had to pick what he thought was the best. Burke didn’t pick what he thought was the best kids, rather the best to match-up against the Canadian team. Now let’s see if they can handle the Czechs and/or Finns.

Yeah. Broduer had a bad game, in part forced by a good forechecking gameplan by Team USA.
Team USA deserves a lot of credit for the win—for the way they cleared pucks at the most dangerous moments, the way they played goal, and the way they exploited what might be Canada’s only weakness.
But I will be honest… I think Team Canada is having a hard time with all this pressure, being on home soil. The result of that game was just as much about the things Team USA did as it was the things Canada didn’t do or the things they screwed up.

Are Pronger and Scott Niedermayer better than Mike Green?
No and yes.
Are Jarone Iginla and Corey Perry better than Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos?
Jarome: Yes and yes.
Perry: No frickin way. No frickin way.
Is Ryan Getzlaf better than Brad Richards?
Probably, but you wouldn’t know that by watching this tournament.
Is Joe Thornton the worst money player in the history of hockey?
Pierre Turgeon didn’t exactly turn it up in the post-season, but I’m still saying yes.
