Rangers Could Have Put That 3rd Round Pick To Better Use

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

In sending a third- round selection in next year’s Entry Draft to Los Angeles for fourth-line center candidate Brian Boyle, Rangers general manager Glen Sather traded his team out of the possibility of getting Boston’s dynamic Phil Kessel on a Group II free agent offer sheet.

Maybe the cost of the contract plus the cost in compensation wouldn’t have been worth it and maybe it would have. Maybe the cap-stressed Bruins would have matched, but maybe they wouldn’t have or couldn’t have.

But if the Rangers had kept their third-round pick, they’d at least have been in position to offer Kessel, the 21-year-old right wing who scored 36 goals in his third NHL season, an offer sheet for approximately the $5.5 million he’s seeking but won’t get from Boston.

makes sense, that the rangers would love to overpay another player.  I mean, It’s not like Gomez, Drury, Rossvial, and Redden are severly overpaid as it is.  They gotta overpay to get kessel too!  Kessel is good, but look at who he is playing with, Savard and Kreijici.
5.5 makes no sense what soever, plus losing the draft picks would make it even worse.
sathers needs to get fired, he has handed out bad contract after bad contract, and the rangers are more screwed then ever.  like Milbury, except of trading everyone good away for nothing, hes signing a bunch of nothings for franchise player money, so now he can’t even offer market value for his impending free agents.

Larry brooks is a toole and doesnt know wtf he is talkin about.  THIS is the salary cap era, overpaying to get rfa is very bad, especially with a cap stricken team like the rangers.  What happens if he ends up like penner?  Penner looked insane when he was on the ducks, now the oilers can’t even give him away.

How exactly were the Rangers going to get Kessel for a 3rd round pick? Plus they are already over the cap and have a team of players that nobody wants….....

Kevin, he means he would require the 3rd rd pick in an offer sheet.  If the rangers were to make an offer of say 5.5 million a year, the compensation would be two 1st rd picks, a 2nd rd pick and a 3rd.  A mighty price to pay for kessel, and probably a lot more then it would cost to trade for him. If im the Bruins GM, I would jump for joy if someone made an offer sheet like that,  Anything less then that where the compensation would becomes less, would make kessel affordable for the Bruins.
Its a win win situation if anyone makes an offer.
