from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
The Rangers are among the handful of NHL teams watching Peter Forsberg very closely when the 36-year-old free-agent center tests his chronically injured right foot in the Karjala Cup tournament that opens today in Sweden and will conclude over the weekend in Finland, The Post has learned.
“Yes, we have interest in Forsberg,” GM Glen Sather said. “From the reports we’ve been getting, the foot is much better than it was a year ago.
According ot Lyle Richardson and George Malik, Forsberg would have to clear NHL waivers in order to sign with an NHL team. Something to keep in mind if it gets to that point.

Forsberg hasn’t played for another league. He is playing for his country, meaning that you have to question whether he has to pass through waivers. Either way, I can imagine a team like the Rangers signing him to a poison pill type contract, whereby any competition would be scared off, either by contract length or salary.

I was under the impression he did not have to pass through waivers as long as he didn’t play for Modo (league outside N.A.) after the NHL season started. CBA 13.23
I don’t think the Karjala Cup counts as “games played in an outside league”, which is why Forsberg is willing to play in the tournament. If the games did count, then he would have continued to play with Modo after the NHL season started as well. This is of course just my opinion and my understanding of the situation.

haha, I know right. No problem. I thought the whole point was Forsberg wanted to choose where he would play (Cup contender), so I don’t think he would put that in jeopardy.
