from William Houston of the Globe and Mail,
Two weeks ago, NBC’s Sunday afternoon hockey telecast outdrew ABC’s NBA coverage. Both had 1.0 ratings (number of households tuned in), but NBC produced a larger audience share.
Last week, ABC rebounded to earn a 1.9 rating (Miami-Detroit), while NBC, with two weak regional matchups (Detroit-Columbus and Los Angeles-San Jose) slumped to a .71. That’s the lowest rating for an NHL broadcast in years.

Let’s be honest here, folks: There are two things missing from last weekend that have been propping up the NHL’s ratings on cable and broadcast all season long:

Let’s see, two Western powerhouses vs. respective schlubs. Hell, I wouldn’t have even watched the Sharks game if I didn’t have tickets. This is probably a prime reason why the league/NBC wants to go to a flexible schedule—non-playoff teams getting the crap kicked out of them is just very uninteresting.
