From Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun,
Ray Emery’s NHL career is taking a detour—through Russia, where he’ll collect his paycheque in rubles.
The goaltender—whose contract was bought out by the Senators last month—has agreed to a one-year deal which could pay him in excess of $2 million plus bonuses next season with Atlant Mytishchi of the newly-formed Continental Hockey League in Russia, Sun Media has learned.
Update 11:15am ET: From the CP via the Globe & Mail,
“The reality is that since Ray’s buyout there hasn’t been a lot of interest, it doesn’t seem like someone (in the NHL) wants to give him a second chance right now,” Emery’s agent J.P. Barry told The Canadian Press on Wednesday. “It’s a terrific offer from Russia and we’ve been speaking to them for several weeks since the buyout.
“I’ve been talking to Ray a lot over the last couple of months and I know he’s taken a lot of steps to make changes. This is his best opportunity to play next year.”

Percy,
The KHL IS the top Russian League now. They intend for it to rival the NHL in the very near future.

The Kings are 12 million below the cap FLOOR and are in need of goaltending...no offer for emery? I suppose LA isnt the best place to get one’s sense of work ethic back though.

There have been a lot of rumours floating around abotu Emery, and no doubt the Kings didn’t want him setting a bad example for their young kids. I’m not sure they have a veteran who could manage to ride herd on him if he became a problem.
Here’s hoping he actually gets his poop in a pile playing in Russia.

Um, Mike at MHH, the Continental Hockey League has not even played a game yet, so yes, my apologies, I missed that the Russian Super Leagues recently merged due to financial considerations (remember when the WHA signed Bobby Hull to first million dollar contract in sports history, the one that was going to render the NHL obsolete?). I was trying to point out that I think it’s racist the dude can’t get a job considering he brought the Sens to the Cup two seasons ago, then lost his starting spot prior to training camp because of injury; sure he’s late to practice and has run-ins with reporters, but if that’s the case, Ron Hextall would’ve backed up Tretiak through the latter decades of the 20th century. Dany Heatley and Craig McTavish both killed people in acts of vehicular homicide and the League was more than happy to allow both to return, Chris Simon called Peter Worrell a n- and was minimally suspended before returning to go Joe Pesci on Ryan Hollweg, then stomp on Jarkko Ruutu, then return after a 30-game ban. Basically, it’s a case of know your place, boy, plain and simple, can’t imagine it’s easy keeping cool when folks are on your case not 3 months after you backstop a team to the Cup. PS, did you see any Sens games last year? Any that would indicate their defensive zone coverage was anything but an abomination?

is it off-color to suggest he’s been blacklisted? Deservedly so, but gotta love how the dude took his team to the Cup two seasons ago and now he can’t even get a contract in Russia’s top tier league.
