from Michael Farber of Sports Illustrated,
So as a cautionary tale, we present a handful of marquee free-agent disappointments. The list is not all-inclusive and certainly open to interpretation. Was Hossa a bust because Detroit lost Game 7 of the final to the Penguins? Paul Kariya has 80 points in 93 games with St. Louis since signing his three-year, $18 million contract in 2007, but do leadership and assists make up for a paucity of goals and a mostly lost 2008-09 season because of hip surgeries?
Tough calls, like the ones GM will be making at 12:01 pm on July 1.
2006
Jay McKee, defenseman, four years, $16 million
St. Louis needed bodies to fill out its roster at the time president John Davidson overpaid, albeit moderately, for McKee….
Rob Blake, defenseman, two years, $12 million
A Blake homecoming in Los Angeles seemed like a natural, but he was largely ineffectual on a team in deep rebuilding mode….

What a poorly-thought-out article.
Huet’s work in the playoffs washes out middling-to-poor play in the season (not like Khabibulin did any better). If not for Huet, the Hawks wouldn’t have even been competitive with the Wings in the Conference Finals.
Briere is YES injured some of the time—but it’s more the fault of one Simon Gagne in terms of constantly being hurt and hindering his team. And Briere still scores (when healthy) when the much-hyped Jeff Carter decides to disappear around every January or February. It also doesn’t help that the Flyers are constantly trying to go out and overpay for aging defensemen…
Drury and Gomez have both been hindered by a coaching staff constantly tinkering with their roster and lines. Hard to get much of anything going with linemates that way.
And again, for some reason shots at Hossa for scoring 40 goals and carrying the team at points during the season.
