Renney Fired

NHL Live announces Renney firing!

added 12:08pm, from Steve Zipay of Blue Notes,

In the midst of a late-season tailspin and with the strong possibility of his team missing the playoffs, Rangers head coach Tom Renney was dismissed today after more five years behind the bench.

No replacement was immediately named.

Ending weeks of media speculation, Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather cut the cord today. A team spokesman said assistant coach Perry pearn also was fired. Mike Pelino and goaltending coach Benoit Allaire remain.

Update 12:13pm - On Fan590, Nick Kypreos is suggesting that John Tortorella is being targeted by the Rangers as a replacement.

added 1:08pm, from Mark Hermann of In the Crease at Newsday,

Renney addressed the team in what was an emotional session, players said. Lundqvist agreed with the notion that it is odd inasmuch as, earlier in the season, Renney was considered maybe the top coach in the league. “He didn’t change,” the goalie said, adding that it is a results business and when the results aren’t there, changes have to come.

Wade Redden felt it personally, acknowledging that Renney always was loyal to him despite his struggles, and implied that he owes it to his now-former coach to step it up and justify that faith.

Great observation on Twitter a few moments ago by Predators fan @codeyh; all four coaches that participated in the season-opening games in Europe have now been fired (Renney, Melrose, Hartsburg, Therrien).

Also, all four coaches that served under the worst four of the worst GMs in the NHL have been fired.  Interesting coincidence.

It’s funny (well, not funny but...you know), because I happened to turn the game on at the VERY second that Toronto scored in OT and after the celebration and whatnot, Sportsnet showed the Toronto bench’s reaction to the goal, then the Ranger bench’s reaction.  Renney just kinda hung his head and walked off, and I thought to myself that this is the reaction of a guy who’s job was on the line…

Then I picked up the phone and fired the guy,

Yep, I’m Glen Sather.
