Nick Kypreos on Fan 590 reporting the follwing trade: Alex Steen and Carlo Colaiacovo for Lee Stempniak.
added 1:50pm, St. Louis Blues President John Davidson announced today the team has acquired defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo and center Alexander Steen from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Lee Stempniak.
“We feel we have improved our club today for both the short and long term by adding Carlo and Alex,” said Davidson. “Carlo is solid two-way defenseman and will provide depth to our blueline and Alex can play center or wing and can score at the NHL level.” “Lee has done a tremendous job in St. Louis. He is a classy individual and we would like to thank him for all of his work on and off the ice that he has provided to the St. Louis Blues.”

I know Toronto was looking to clear out a defenseman, but giving away Steen as well seems rather silly.

Read that as SCHENN first time through and just about crapped the bed. Steen makes a whole lot more sense…

As a Leafs fan, I’m excited to get another top 6 right handed shot in the line up. Hope Lee’s knee isn’t a lingering problem.

It seems like Davidson made a mistake in judgment on the two Leafs players. Colaiacovo and Steen HAD potential and were held in high regard like 1-2 years ago. Now, they have plateaued and aren’t considered blue chip prospects anymore. I believe Davidsons judgment on them came from his memory and not from up to date scouting. Stempniak is a legitimate top6 forward. It’s not hard to see who won this trade. It shouldn’t take a genius.

Not a fan of either team, but the Leafs win this one going away.

Steen’s trade is a mistake. His dogged forechecking and tough play away from the puck have often contributed to Leafs’ goal even though he didn’t end up on the score sheet.

Can that really be all? A little-used, oft-injured defenseman and slow-starting center, for a nearly point-per-game player (this season)?
