via TSN,
Sources tell TSN Jay Bouwmeester has agreed to terms with the Calgary Flames.
Bouwmeester avoids unrestricted free agency, agreeing to a 5 year deal.
added 8:34pm,
Calgary, AB - Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today the signing of defenseman Jay Bouwmeester to a multi-year agreement.
The Flames acquired Bouwmeester on June 27, 2009 from the Florida Panthers in exchange for Jordan Leopold and the 67th pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
“Jay is one of the most complete defenseman in the game, and we are very pleased to have reached an agreement that will make him an important component of the Calgary Flames success,” said Sutter. “We identified Jay as the priority player where we were going to focus our money. We wanted an opportunity a few days in advance of the deadline, and that’s why we made the move we did this past weekend.”
“I am happy to have this deal done as Calgary was a team I was very interested in playing for. I was encouraged by the commitment Calgary showed by acquiring me prior to July 1,” said Bouwmeester. “I am familiar with some of the players and believe we have a strong club that is poised to make the next step in becoming a championship club. I look forward to contributing to that success.”
added 8:42pm, TSN has added this to their story from above,
Bouwmeester avoids unrestricted free agency, agreeing to a 5 year deal worth $6.6 million per year against the salary cap.

If Sutter is interested in Heatley, he will have to move a Phaneuf contract to get room. Unless he can dump Kipper on someone - that would clear the cap space.

Of all the coaches to get Phaneuf back on track, Brent Sutter was one of them. I think it would be a mistake to trade Phaneuf, someone who was touted as a future Norris candidate just a few years back. If I was Sutter the Older, I would do everything to trade Olli Jokinen for Heatley, if that is indeed what they’re looking at for a trade.
Oh, and thanks word verification for “67property”. As if a Leafs fan like myself needs to be reminded of that number again.

$6.6. million is a very reasonable sum for a 25 year old like JayBo (especially with Brian Campbell getting $7.1 for eight years) ....I think they keep Phaneuf and somehow make it work rounding out the roster with lesser players and leaning heavily on the top dogs..
IMO, great acquisition and signing for Calgary.

Yep, I am with the last two folks who commented. Calgary now has a strong D corp and no need to break it up.
Scoring will be an issue but as D. Sutter said last week, time for some of the youngsters to step up.

Oh, I agree that it is a smart signing - I was just commenting that if they wanted to get Heatley they would have to move such a large contract as Phaneuf has.
I don’t think they really need Heatley all that much - certainly not enough to break up the defense they just built twenty minutes ago. It looks pretty solid indeed.

No way Dion leaves, especially with B. Sutter behind the bench. With Dion, JayBo and Reggie anchoring the D, they will be a force on the Blue Line. Throw in Pardy, Gio and maybe a guy like Aulie coming up and they are one of the best D Corps in the league! I do, however, recognize as in past years putting the puck in the net will be an issue. A full year of Iggy and Olli should result in some decent numbers. Young guys will have to step it up and a guy like Backlund could come in and make an impact. You can also figure that a vet or two (i.e. Bert and Nolan in the last two years) will come in on manageable one year contracts! I’m not buying any of this Heatley for anyone talk. Should be interesting.

Well if they want to move Heatley, they have under 3 hours to do so. I cannot see Murray paying Heatley $4M tomorrow and then trading him.
Why not move Jokinen for Heatley? Hurry Bryan, do it now.

So, does that mean that Phaneuf is gone, since he supposedly has that clause in his contract that states he’s the highest paid D-man? Maybe the Phaneuf for Heatley rumors will pan out?
