added 8:43pm, Since Darren Dreger broke the news, let’s go to his story…
The drama surrounding Phil Kessel has finally come to an end as the Boston Bruins have traded their disgruntled sniper to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a 1st and a 2nd round pick in 2010, and a 1st round pick in 2011 pending a trade call which is currently underway.
Kessel and the Maple Leafs then quickly agreed to terms on a new five-year, $27 million deal.
continued and below you can check how this story broke early this evening…
added 10:!6pm,
Brian Burke, president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Friday evening that the team has obtained the rights to restricted free agent forward Phil Kessel from the Boston Bruins. In exchange, Boston will receive the Maple Leafs’ first-round draft picks in 2010 and 2011 and their second-round draft pick in 2010. Kessel and the Maple Leafs agreed to terms on a multi-year contract following the trade
via Darren Dreger of TSN,
Sources say the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins are putting the finishing touches on a trade that will deliver Phil Kessel to the Leafs.
added 6:00pm, via Dreger’s Twitter,
Sources say Kessel to Toronto is very, very close. Not done…pending Bruins final sign off.
added 6:39pm, via the Twitter of Jeff Marek of CBC,
From everyone I talk to the Kessel deal is done. Only question is what goes the other way?
added 6:53pm, Dreger with another tweet-
Ooooh. Kessel to Toronto is real close now.
added 7:08pm, from the National Post,
The Toronto Maple Leafs are close to acquiring forward Phil Kessel from the Boston Bruins, a source familiar with the negotiations has told the Post’s Bruce Arthur.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to deal two first-round picks and a second-rounder for the 21-year-old restricted free agent, who has been unable to come to terms with the Bruins.
added 7:20pm, Another Dreger tweet,
TSN reporting Kessel traded to the Leafs, conditional to contract agreement.
added 7:26pm, from Darren Dreger at TSN,
The trade is pending Kessel agreeing to a contract with Toronto. It’s a process the Leafs are working on right now.
If the contract gets done, the deal is finalized and the trade goes through. If the Maple Leafs are unable to come to terms on a contract with Kessel, the deal may fall through.
added 7:54pm, from Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun, “
Nothing is done yet,” Burke said. “When there is something to announce, the Toronto Maple Leafs will make the announcement.”
added 8:16pm, Damien Cox of the Toronto Star via his Twitter,

Oh man, this is crazy….i mean two firsts and a second, and a cap hit of 5.4! This deal stinks, even for a die hard leaf fan.

Wow!!! Boston wanted to give him something like $11-12 million for 3 seasons.
No wonder he held out. Maybe his agent had some kind of infomation.
3 years @ $3.75m vs. 5 years @ $5.4m.That’s a big difference.

Classic Burke overpayment.

^At least his overpayment has yielded success. Let’s ask Tampa how their payment plans are going.

Where? The Ducks were good when Burke inherited them. I give Randy Carlysle and Bryan Murray more credit for the success of that team than Burke.

Who’s the winner here?
The Leafs get Kessel but they pay way too much.
The B’s get some primo draft picks, but draft picks don’t always pan out. Who will they draft, the next Joe Thornton, or Phil Kessel? Speaking of Thornton, when are the Bruins going to get rid of Marco Sturm? With him still hanging around it’s almost like they got something out of the deal.
Kessel gets his paycheck, but he has to pay for the Leafs.
Lose-lose-lose?

Does this make Kessel the highest-paid player on the Leafs?
A lot of pressure comes along with that, and according to reports he’s a pretty introverted person - I wonder if he will be able to handle the attention and the pressure, or if it will crush him. He’s still young, and I don’t know if he really understands what he is in for.
He’ll have to mature rapidly or he’ll crash and burn in spectacular fashion. For his sake, I hope he grows up fast.

I thought that was Jeff Finger.

I might be mistaken, but I thought I had read that Kessel was ‘only’ looking for $4-4.5M.
