Report- Bryzgalov On Waivers

from TSN,
Sources say when the National Hockey League’s waiver transactions are sent out at Noon et on Friday, the Anaheim Ducks will make netminder Ilya Bryzgalov available.
added 11:18am, from the OC Register,
“We’re making this move, first and foremost, to give Ilya Bryzgalov a chance to play,” Ducks general manager Brian Burke said. “He’s a good guy who’s played well for us, but we’ve committed to the other goaltender."…
“I’ve been unable to move Ilya in a trade,” Burke said. “I’ve laid it out for his agent (Don Meehan), and told him we would take this next step. We’ll see where it goes.”
added 11:59am, via the CP,
“What I promised Bryz is that I would find him a place to play,” Burke told The Canadian Press on Friday. “Bryz is a great kid and a loyal soldier. He’s won three playoff rounds for us and he deserves to play somewhere. But I was unable to move him.
“The single, biggest obstacle was that he’s unrestricted at the end of the year. I wasn’t offered anything of value for him. But I promised him, `If I can’t get something of value for you, we’ll put you on waivers."’
added 12:16pm, from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Evgeni Nabokov and Miikka Kiprsuoff for every game this year, an indication that - salary-cap permitting - they might be in the market for an established back-up, rather than trust the youngsters that they’re carrying on their rosters at the moment.
added 12:43pm, more from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
One more possible destination for Ilya Bryzgalov, the goaltender put on waivers by the Anaheim Ducks this morning: The Pittsburgh Penguins, who’ve gotten decent work from back-up Dany Sabourin so far this year, plus some up-and-down play from starter Marc-Andre Fleury.

penaltyshots, lowest in the standings have first choice.

How close is Anaheim to the cap? It seems like they’ll probably have to clear a lot more if the cap relief is only $900,000. Add in Hiller’s salary (league minimum?) and you’re not talking a whole lot of savings.
There are a lot of teams out there that would be silly not to pick him up.

Thank you. Common sense I guess, but something I never knew.

This will give them about 6.2 million in cap space. I have seen a certain amount of speculation that Niedermayer/Selanne made a deal with Burke and are just waiting until their return coincides with the Ducks cap space available. Every dollar saved would bring them back that much earlier.

The Wings should be after this guy, he is just entering his prime years. There is no way there will be a re-entry waiver with the poultry having to pick up half his salary. If he is unclaimed on this waiver, he stays down for the season.

Do remember, Ilya is a UFA at the end of this season.
Posted by Paul from Motown Area on 11/16/07 at 12:18 PM ET
Unless Hasek is ready to announce his retirement tomorrow, picking up Bryzgalov doesn’t make much sense for the Wings. On the other hand, teams like Phoenix, Pittsburgh (even if it’s only as a “rent-a-mentor” for M.A. Fleury this season), Atlanta, and Tampa Bay should take a very serious look.
Posted by YzermanZetterberg on 11/16/07 at 01:09 PM ET
I am aware of that..
confident Holland could work that out, meanwhile you have until next July to see if he fits the team chemistry. If not..well he will be just too expensive and nobody could blame the wings for letting him sign with another team.
Posted by Gramps from HockeyTown on 11/16/07 at 01:12 PM ET
Okay Gramps, I’ll bite. Say the Wings grab Bryzgalov (if he manages by some miracle to slip to them with their 2nd-in-the-NHL record). They send the pre-waivered Aaron Downey to GR...and then what?
Please keep in mind how well things worked out last time we had three goalies who actually expected PT (last year with Joey Mac doesn’t count).
Posted by YzermanZetterberg on 11/16/07 at 01:25 PM ET
If it was easy, it would already be a done deal for some team. Paul: I think the last time the wings had 3 Q netminders expecting PT was before the new CBA. It is an entirely different business now, that is why he is on waivers.

Phoenix will pick him up if WAS or BUF do not. I don’t see him getting past those teams.
Posted by Itlan on 11/16/07 at 01:43 PM ET
Can anyone explain to me how Burke was unable to get SOMETHING for this guy? He has a very good pedigree, performed well in first round for Anaheim last year, and despite being a UFA at the end of the year, is on a CHEAP contract for this year. I find it almost impossible to believe that no team was willing to trade some sort of draft pick for this player. You may not get a lot, but it is still better than the nothing you get for losing the player on waivers.
Posted by Darrell on 11/16/07 at 01:48 PM ET
Kolzig has been fine for Washington, from what I’ve heard. They can’t score enough when there are any injuries.
If he does make it past Phoenix, what about Edmonton? I know their budget is a concern, but they have some room under the cap and Roloson hasn’t been what you might call stellar.

Gotta tell ya,
I just traded for Bryz two weeks ago in the hopes that this would happen. I’m very excited right now, if he starts regularly somewhere it would bolster my team!
Goooo Ilya!!
Posted by Ben on 11/16/07 at 02:19 PM ET
RE: Edmonton—it seems that their situation is somewhat similar to Detroit’s. The starter (Roloson) has been struggling, but the backup (Garon) has played pretty well...at least lately (not saying he’s played as well as Ozzie). In fact, don’t tell Alanah, but Garon actually outplayed her beloved Luongo the other night to steal a shootout win for the Oilers. Plus, they probably have enough other problems with Souray out indefinitely, difficulty scoring (including Penner’s low numbers), Pisani’s medical issues, etc. to want to take on a “three-headed monster” in net.
Posted by YzermanZetterberg on 11/16/07 at 02:21 PM ET
Kolzig has been fine, but he’s 38 and will need rest. I.B. is much better than Johson, IMO. As a Caps fan I would love for them to claim I.B.
Anyone know how long till he clears/until he is claimed?
Posted by David on 11/16/07 at 02:21 PM ET
I had no idea Kolzig was 38. Don’t know why I’m surprised, he’s been around forever.
Bryzgalov seems to be a pretty mellow character, probably good for a struggling team. I think he’d work out well in Washington.

I wonder if anyone could verify that 6.2 M in cap space comment. NHL numbers .com has is 07-08 salary at under 1.4 M (cap hit).
I suggested the Wings go for him on my Oct 15 blog entry
“Ilya Bryzgalov was amazing in both games against the Wings.
His 2007-08 salary, 1.63 M, and the Ducks have to unload him to re-instate Neidermayer and Selanne and stay under the Cap. Are you reading this Mr Holland, sure he is a UFA next summer, but the Wings have had good luck with Russians. 27 yrs young, he is just reaching his prime.”

Darrell,
Burke likely could have gotten something for Bryz, but nothing that he felt was worth adding the return player to Anaheim’s cap.
Posted by Jeff from Boston, MA on 11/16/07 at 02:40 PM ET
Draft picks don’t add to the cap and could be quite handy around the trade deadline.
It would be interesting to find out, however, if Kevin Lowe made an offer and Burke decided he would rather let someone take Bryz for “free” than deal with his former friend in Edmonton.
Posted by YzermanZetterberg on 11/16/07 at 02:51 PM ET
Unless I am reading something wrong on NHL numbers, it seems to me that removing Bryz puts them at about 6.2 with Hiller’s addition. Unless I’m looking in the wrong spot:

Sheeeesh—If someone doesn’t claim this guy soon, I may have to! I wonder how Ilya will like being the starting goaltender on the rink at our local elementary school? (As an added bonus, I’m sure my 12-year old will let him borrow his “Giguere” model goalie stick.)
Posted by YzermanZetterberg on 11/16/07 at 04:12 PM ET
I think there may be possible character/ego issues with him, and that’s why nobody’s jumping up and down to get him.
Posted by Primis from Michigan on 11/16/07 at 04:14 PM ET
I haven’t heard anything detrimental about his character. He seems like a quiet, mellow guy, though, and sometimes that gets misinterpreted as a “lack of competitive fire.” As though the only way to demonstrate a competitive nature is by screaming like a rabid fishwife.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 11/16/07 at 04:20 PM ET
If I remember correctly, they have to go from team to team down the list, so it’s not just like everyone can just jump up and say, “We want him.” It’s still kind of aggravating, though. My frustration probably speaks more to my current level of boredom than anything else.

As though the only way to demonstrate a competitive nature is by screaming like a rabid fishwife.
Or flopping aimlessly around the crease and leaving the net at inopportune moments designed to terrify yout team’s fans.
Whoops, did I type that out loud?
Posted by YzermanZetterberg on 11/16/07 at 04:24 PM ET
From my understanding, teams have until tomorrow to place a claim for him. Not until then will we know who ends up with him on their team.
Posted by Hec from L.A. on 11/16/07 at 04:31 PM ET
I have heard he is very relaxed, and approachable before a start, rather than isolating himself like many.
If that is a detriment, maybe he belongs with the NYR, because it

Either that, or you need to reduce the volume on the voices in your head. I can hear them all the way over here!

Starting to make cap space for Niedermayer I’ll bet. There could be at least ten teams go after him. Does anyone know how it works if multiple teams are chasing the same guy on waivers? Is it first come first serve?
