“Everyone in the organization wanted him to stay with us,” said team owner Mike Ilitch.
Ilitch singled out longtime captain and current team executive Steve Yzerman for his insistence that the Red Wings’ management retain Datsyuk.
“We felt it was extremely important to lock this player up for as long as we can,” Yzerman said at an afternoon news conference at Joe Louis Arena.
“This contract was extremely important to me,” Datsyuk said. “Especially since I have been a Red Wing since 2001.”

Wow, some potentially good news regarding the Wings!  YAY!  I needed that today.  It is snowing and frigid here today in Colorado.

If that’s base-value and not incentive-laden, then the only thing I can think of is Holland is playing “futures trader”—hedging his bet that the salary cap will continue to rise significantly over the term of the deal, bringing dollars from Ilitch’s bottomless piggy bank into play again.

Either that or because Holland is getting such a bargain on Zetterberg’s contract, which runs through 2008-09 at “only” $2.65mm, he’s looking at it from a combined bang-for-the-buck standpoint.

Base value, no incentives (there are no more “attainable bonuses” clauses for players who are neither rookies nor 35+).

It’s a solid deal.  Datsyuk remains a Red Wing until he’s 35, Hank’s salary definitely offsets the first few years of the deal, and if the cap does go up, as it’s assumed, Pavel is locked in at a level the Red Wings can afford.
