from ESPN,
Sergei Gonchar of the Pittsburgh Penguins will mis 4-6 months due to surgery on a dislocated left shoulder, a source told ESPN.com’s Pierre LeBrun on Monday.
The team is expected to announce Gonchar’s injury status on Tuesday.
added 9/30/08, via the Pittsburgh Penguins,
Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his dislocated shoulder Thursday and will be sidelined for four to six months.
UPMC physician Dr. Mark Rodosky will perform the surgery to repair cartilage and ligament damage to his left shoulder. Gonchar suffered the injury during the first period of the Penguins’ pre-season opener against Tampa Bay on September 20.
“It is always difficult to lose a very talented player and leader for an extended period of time, but we all believe this is the best decision for Sergei,” said Ray Shero, the Penguins’ executive vice president and general manager. “We are confident that he will come back strong after this surgery. In the meantime, we’ll look to our other defensemen to step up in his absence.”

...I think it may be wise to find some sort of extra veteran blueline addition…
I have just two words for you…Andreas Lilja.

Pens are fine. Except that Hal Gill when have a bigger role…
Letang - Orpik
Gill - Scuderi
Eaton - Sydor
Its like 3 pairs of number 2 defensemen
+ Goligoski (apparently. I havent seen him play yet, but only good things said about him)

Eaton was lost for most of the season last year to injury, and is a solid defenseman. Hopefully, him, Goligoski, and Letang can fill in the gaps on the back end. I guess the offense is going to have to put up big numbers this year to compensate.

At first I almost began to cry when i read this, but then i got a stupid little George Bush like smile on my face.
Why?
When Fleury got hurt, Conks stepped up. When Eaton got hurt, Scuds stepped up. When Sid got hurt, Malkin stepped up.
So my question, who is going to step up now?
We all have fond fond memories of amazing plays by Kris Letang in the AHL and a few glimpses of it the NHL. If he can begin to play like that on a regular basis, he could be BETTER than both Whitney and Gonchar offensively. I know that is a stretch, but the kid has some crazy skill.
Oh, and the Penguins aren’t going to trade anything good away for anyone. They might pick up a 40 yr old defenseman for a 7th round pick, but don’t expect to see a Brian Campbell to San Jose type deal.

The pens are going to fill all the holes they get this year with baby pens. No Hossa-esque deadline deals either.
Starting to think they maybe gave up too much for Hossa? (esp that 1st rounder)

Whether or not the cost was “too much” depends on how much the organization and the fans value making it to the Cup Finals. Without Hossa, they may well have fallen in one of the earlier rounds.
The only consolation the Pens have is that the 1st rounder they gave away would have gotten them little more than a bottom-five pick in that round anyway. Nowhere near as big a deal as losing a 1st rounder a couple of years earlier.

OTC is right, the first wouldn’t have gave us anything that would be helping this season, but possibly a few years down the road. And EC and Army were perennial third/fourth liners in my opinion. And yes, i very much value getting to the cup finals. You figure the pens went from being god awful with Edzo, to being pretty bad Therriens first half year, to making a last half run and getting into the playoffs, to making it to the first round. It’s been an awesome run and I don’t think they have made too many mistakes. Hopefully they won’t begin making them by trading away our future to make up for a couple injuries.
I made a mistake by saying that there won’t be a trade. Trades are always on the table, but I don’t believe that our likeliness to make a trade has risen because of the injuries. If a trade is made now, it will be one that would have been made regardless of injuries. At least that would be the right way to go in my opinion.

WOW! Gonchar and Whitney out for such a long period of time….the Pens are going to need to figure something out. I think younger guys like Letang and Goligoski will be able to step into bigger roles, but I think it may be wise to find some sort of extra veteran blueline addition…
