Report- Jagr Talking To Oilers

from David Staples of The Cult of Hockey,

A source close to Czech hockey ace Jaromir Jagr says that Jagr is close to finalizing negotiations with the Edmonton Oilers, reports Euro-hockey expert Peter Adler.

The source would not say when Jagr would report to Edmonton, how much he would be paid, or how long he would sign for. Jagr is now playing with Omsk in the financially-troubled Kontinental Hockey League.

continued and one question?, how about waivers?

update 2:23pm, From David Staples at The Cult of Hockey,

Oilers hockey ops boss Kevin Lowe is indicating that Czech hockey ace Jaromir Jagr, 37, isn’t coming to Edmonton—at least not this season, reports Euro-hockey expert Peter Adler.

“Jaromir is under contract in the KHL,” Lowe told Adler.

Jagr has also told Czech national team coach Vladimir Ruzicka he will be playing for the Czech team at the world championships in May.

waivers could easily be negotiated, just lean on garth snow to claim jagr for the isles, then pull a trade sending the isles a little bonus (say, one of edmontons 79 young center prospects) for their trouble.

edm and nyi have a history of pulling useful little trades together, didn’t allan rourke get moved across for edm’s 3rd rounder in ‘07 so they could do the penner offer sheet?

let us count the teams that would claim him before the oilers.  Although, the Oilers could theoretically sign him for a very large number making it implausible and slightly impossible that he would be claimed.  Other than that…

I don’t think that would work. If I’m reading this CBA passage right, he’d have to clear waivers prior to any trade:

13.23 In the event a professional or former professional Player plays in a league outside North America after the start of the NHL Regular Season, other than on Loan from his Club, he may thereafter play in the NHL during that Playing Season (including Playoffs) only if he has first either cleared or been obtained via Waivers. For the balance of the Playing Season, any such Player who has been obtained via Waivers may be Traded or Loaned only after again clearing Waivers or through Waiver claim.

From a comment in the other post:
the waver rule really depends on what Jagr’s contract says now, and how the KHL lets him go.  If Jagr’s KHL team buys him out or releases him from his contract out right he would be a free agent and wouldn’t have to go through wavers.  The only reason Jagr would have to go through wavers is if the Oilers were to pick up his existing contract in the KHL.  That is what “on loan” means...

The CBA doesn’t say anything about the contract in the other league, only if he plays in another league. And the ‘on loan’ bit is from an NHL club, ie if Jagr had been under contract to the Oilers already before playing in the KHL. I gather this would apply to Radulov should he return, even though he was ‘loaned’ against his team’s wishes.

So everyone is more interested in talking about the waiver aspect of it, instead of the “This makes no sense ot EDM whatsoever” aspect of it?

What’s up with that?  Bringing in Jagr isn’t going to address EDM’s problems, which include no real good veteran defensive defensemen, few good defensive forwards, and subpar goaltending.  I don’t see how Jagr would affect any of those…

Whatever the timeline, truthiness, or waiver issues surrounding this, the bigger thought should be paired with Emery and his failure to report to his KHL team: the League seems far more troubled than the NHL, and it may have lost its lustre to the point where reverse migration might be the trend of the summer. They’ll offer dollars above the NHL to some once again, but especially the story of Emery losing roughly 33% of his pay because of ‘funny’ exchange calculations is sure to sour more than a few on the prospect.

Woohoo… then the NHL teams can get all those mediocre players back on their bottom two lines!  Good times!

Seriously though, the Jagr thing makes total sense for Edmonton… especially after you proceed forward with the understanding that the management there has absolutely no idea what the hell they are going to do from one day to the next.  I wouldn’t be remotely surprised to see them claim Avery on re-entry waivers before the Rangers could… or have them try and get Emery… or try and get Gretzky to center their second line for old times sake…
