Report: Lecavalier Agrees to Terms of $77 million, 9 Year Deal

From Bob McKenzie at TSN,

The final touches are still being worked on and nothing can be formally announced until July 1, but sources tell TSN the Tampa Bay Lightning and superstar centre Vinny Lecavalier have agreed to terms on a mega-deal that will pay him $77 million over nine years.

The annual salary cap hit to the Lightning will be about $8.55 million for the length of the contract, but the final year of the contract is said to be only for about $3 million, which means that if Lecavalier retired after eight seasons, his average salary would be as much as $9.4 million.

Wow, and good on Vinny for taking less than a cap max average.

Vinny turned 28 in April.  So he’ll be 36 for the final season of this contract--with an $8.55 million dollar cap hit.  Only a handful of players can still play in the NHL when they’re 35 or older, and almost none deserve $8.55 million.  By my count, there were 11 35+ year old skaters who had a cap hit of $4 million or more last season.  Five were defencemen, who mature later and last longer: Zubov, Norstrom, Schneider, Blake, and Lidstrom.

That leaves six forwards: Holik, Fedorov, Guerin, Jagr, Tkachuk, and Sundin.  The first five of those are at the top of the list of big, long contracts that teams would rather forget.  The other was signed by the Leafs.  Not looking good so far, Tampa.

They still need a bona fide, numero uno netminder.  Marc Denis is gone and at best, he’s good backup.

That team ain’t the same since Khabibulin left.
