Report: Meszaros Signs Offer Sheet

From Adam Proteau at The Hockey News,

Hours after Ottawa GM Bryan Murray held a news conference to announce the team was at a contractual impasse with restricted free agent defenseman Andrej Meszaros, The Hockey News has learned from a source close to the negotiations that Meszaros has agreed to a multi-year offer sheet with an average salary in excess of $5 million per season.

The team that has agreed to terms with the 22-year-old has yet to be confirmed.

When contacted by The Hockey News, Murray wouldn’t confirm the report.

Not that the team will stay secret for long, if indeed an offer sheet has been signed, but I’ve posted a list of the teams that could not have signed him, based on a list of teams who have traded away the picks they would need to have in order to sign Meszaros to an offer sheet.

If this is accurate, I’m a little surprised nothing about the team has been leaked yet, even rumoured (beyond regular forum-type banter)…

I’m not sure yet whether I want this to be true or not… I guess that’ll really depend on what team it is…

meszaros is not worth 5 mil, but I’d be loathe to let him walk for a 30th overall pick…

I am somewhat certain it is Tampa Bay that has “signed” Meszaros.  Tampa does not have the 3rd round pick (it was traded to Pittsburgh) that they need for compensations and that is why nothing has been heard in official news channels (ie nothing on nhl.com tsn.ca etc).

Don’t expect something simple like the rules to stand in the way of Oren Koules signing his man - assuming of course that Koules ever understood the rules in the first place.

It is quite possible that this comes down to an arbitration hearing.  It seems like a flaw in the CBA that certain teams cannot be allowed to sign a free agent (a restricted one) for reasons as unrelated as a traded 3rd round draft pick.

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

Sources told Sun Media last night that Lightning owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie have told the Senators they intend to pursue Meszaros if Ottawa doesn’t deal him to the Bolts, but the indications are GM Bryan Murray doesn’t feel the least bit threatened.

Based on a yearly salary of $5 million, the compensation for signing Meszaros would be a first-, second- and third-round pick.

Cool post, senshobo.

I guess the money is on Tampa though, even though they dont have a third round pick as of yet. I suppose they’ll just buy one from free agency tongue laugh
